If we signed a Grealish type then they'd be in for Allan/Doucoure...

I think with European football we'd need at least one more centre mid and a deeper player.

If we did sign a more attacking midfielder then it wouldnt bring the best out of the other 2...or james as i think he needs that space

The reason teams score alot is because of attacking play and limited defensive nous.

2 attacking full backs and high lines arent something from the 90s other than when Parma were gung ho

Let's see how Gbamin does before definitely saying we need a 6, though.

Part of the reason we tended to be cut open so easily in midfield at times earlier in the season was our players giving the ball away in daft positions. A player capable of breaking the lines with his running or passing, but also retaining possession, would be very useful in that regard.

The more i think about it, the more i think we should look at a 442 diamond next season.

James as the tip of the diamond, 2 box to box players and a deeper midfielder.

Seems to make sense looking at our squad.

We've got a manager who is interchangeable, which is what matters more than a set system. Main thing is bringing in better players to give us better options and different ways of playing.

‘Attack wins games, defence wins titles’.

someone said that. I can’t remember who exactly but I’m *sure* they probably knew what they were talking about.

Trying to remember if they were a successful manager or not...

Lol it's such a stupid quote though isn't it? I mean famous people and 'greats' can say whatever they want and everyone is like 'wow, wow, wow, what a brain, what thinking...what an amazing concept!' and a) if I said that everyone would laugh at me, and b) i say at least one piece of fantastic wisdom which should be a quotable quote, but i only have a 3 y o, a new born and a wife to listen to them, and obviously they don't rate me lol

disclaimers
1) not having a go at you, just a laugh
2) alex ferguson was great of course

Expecting him to take tonight's game by the scruff of the neck and take this game away from Sheffield Wednesday.

A couple of assists and a goal on the way to a nice 4-1 win.

A Hamez blammez is a bit overdue alright. Nice curler in to the far corner tonight please.

Shame that Digne is out for this. The Digne-Hamez Axis of Sexy will be sorely missed.

Yes I'm hoping Rodriguez gets a bit more selfish when around the box. I'd like to see a 25 yard chest, bum, tickle, tackle left footed outside of the boot curler into the top bin

I don't mind what he does as long as he doesn't bring back in 3 at the back until our players are fully comfortable with it.

I do think flexibility in systems is the key to getting James more of the ball though. He is so important to our attacking play.

Yeah. It’s just catchy. The idea is true but ‘you can’t really win the title unless you know how to defend very well’ doesn’t resonate quite as much does it?

Its the same with all the Shankly quotes. Nonsense but sound good so make a nice motivational poster.

But yeah, you aim to out score everyone ever game you’re going to do a Newcastle basically.

I was thinking about the back three period. We were rubbish and were on a bad run. But, I massively believe that period sowed the seed for the wolves performance.

Whilst the performances and results were poor, I think we developed and became adaptable which was necessary for the system against wolves. The ability to transition the way we did and to function as well as we did. I think the groundwork was laid during that period.

Sometimes you’ve got to take a step back to take a couple forward.

SAF said that one btw.

He said it in relation to turning draws into wins or not conceding in the last minutes if I remember correctly, so given that context - it makes sense. I believe they had a few vital games in which they were 1:0 up or something only to draw or something like that. Also worth noting that it was in the second threepeat or thereabouts, when Utd genuinely had the best defence in the league.

Also worth noting that Man Utd have, with SAF at he helm, rarely had a top 3 defence, but often had a top 1 attack, so I'd take it with a grain of salt. At base value, as you say, he is right, but it's a catchy way of saying it - you can't only attack, you won't be able to outscore everyone every time. In all sports the team with the top offence but very good defence is the champion 99% of the time.

Anyway, Hamez lads. Hope he scores 10 tonight.

I think in a search for finding the best formation (to accommodate the players available) we stumbled across a flat deep lying back 4 using 4 specialist CBs. It gave us a solid defensive platform from which we could pinch 3 point in games.

I don't have anything against a back 3 other than our players seem so uncomfortable with it. Nobody seemed to know their role in the team and we were so often exposed at the back. At least when we played with attacking full backs, we still looked like we would score more goals than the opposition.

It will be interesting what Carlo will do going forward as we get more player back. Will he persist with the flat back 4 or go back to the system he started the season with.?

Definitely need a new right back then. Coleman can’t play every game and Holgate won’t provide the width in the same way Digne does. Kenny should move on.
