So guess he's staying then?

It's up in the air.

I'm firmly of the opinion we should not be paying James Rodriguez to play for any other club.

However, that will mean he has to take a wage drop more than likely but in all honesty, he owes us nothing either.

He also has to get his head down if he does stay and make himself available, and Rafael has to have the nous (I think he does) to integrate him into the side/squad and suddenly we'd have an attack with genuine magic as well as pace and intensity.

Doesn't have to be every game, but if he stays, we should use him.

I actually think his absence of pace would really hinder us in the way we’re playing currently*

*this isn’t me saying he is a poor footballer

100%

We just can't play this way every game.

So if he stays, we'd be complete lunatics not to use him in some capacity.

I’d happily pay half his wages if it allows us to sign Diaz.

Agreed.

At least not his full wedge. If getting him off the wage bill at say 50% subsidised means we can bring in someone with talent who can play 40-50 games. Then great. No point letting him go on loan with us paying 80% +

I honestly wouldn't even have that mate. £100k a week is still what, £10.2m a year?

And there will absolutely be times this season where we'd regret paying a player of his quality to play for somebody else.

Assuming hes on 200kpw, lets go with that. That's still 100k saved, being spent on someone who can (hopefully) contribute week in week out.

Look, i'd rather keep him, play him when we can and utilise the fact hes a wonderful footballer. But 200k for someone whos not interested, not fit most of the time... WORST case scenario saving 100k p/w on him isnt a bad thing.

Ofcourse if we can get a fee and all of his wages gone then great, but I cant see it happening.

I think he's a wonderful player but fail to see how he would fit into a hard working, motivated Benitez team. The emphasis now ( correctly) appears to be on the team as a collective.

Given the state of football finance, especially on the Continent, I can’t see anyone taking James given his wages and track record unless Everton pay a proportion of wages on a loan deal. Take the hit financially or integrate back into the squad that’s how I see it
Integrate then.
