Was thinking the same, if he cannot get thru 38 games (plus cups) then start him in the games where the opposition parks the bus primarily at home. Take him off at 70mins if in front and switch to counter attack setup when the opposition is forced to open up. In other games he can come on when we are chasing the game, fresh legs and hopefully find that pass that is needed. I don't think he will fit into the mangers game plan as a regular starter and the manager shouldn't setup the team for him either, Benitez needs full commitment for his style which I don't think James is able to play to.

It's actually the ideal way to use James. Treat him like the luxury he is.

I do fully understand that we can't afford £150-200k or whatever he's on for a player not to be a 100% regular starter. It's a perfectly valid point and if we could have moved him on and got a quality replacement or two in then fine.

But we didn't, and we now can't until at least January (go and get a replacement that is). So use him like he should be used and then reassess when the time comes.

He's here until the end of the season at the latest, but what if what he offers us - in a system which isn't all just reliant on him - proves the difference between 10th and 7th?

Personally, I like a 442 that Benitez seems to prefer.

I would use James as a super sub. Doesn’t necessarily have to fit in a pattern for 90 mins yet could still have an impact on games without knackering him.
I think thats exactly how he will be used and im sure he will win us many points coming from the bench.

They have been briefing it for two months Dave.

I'm not saying it's a conspiracy. It's very, very easy to tell when it's a brief from one source, because all of the writers say the same thing. It happens all of the time and is perfectly normal. Just like how last year they were saying the wages were 'in line with Everton's other high earners' (i.e. £100-120k)

Honestly mate, I can stress to you on this, it's a club brief. Just like the Diaz thing (which was a really weird club brief but I guess they wanted to make it clear that they were actively in the market and that Diaz 'wanted to come' - i.e. no blame could be attached here, it all hangs on James and Porto)

The club brief will probably be as simple as a whatsapp from a press officer, btw. Liverpool's press officer strictly operates over text (to shock nobody, he's a complete weirdo), United's press officers just give out information like it's running out of fashion sometimes!

A lot of it is off the record but that's how club control the stem of information.

What's worried (for lack of a better term here, I'm not biting my nails over it) about some articles in the last week are the ones that have gone to journalists who have a connection with a certain new member of our coaching staff who suddenly have a real insight into Everton and have also written the said articles in a tone that was rather sycophantic.

Now, I have nothing wrong with RB also using the press, but I think it's something we need to be wary of. The Joyce article, for example, was pretty one-sided.
Good Lord. All roads lead back to Benitez?

Then who was behind the negative stories about James last season when he effectively went AWOL? There was a spike of them then. That wasn't Benitez.

There's something bizarre about fans of a club trying to create a persecution narrative to excuse a player who simply doesn't fit in ANYWHERE he goes in world football.

He's a creative but flawed player who cannot or will not adapt to suit changes in style or management.

I agree on the Wolves thing. But you know the club should also have made him be there?

On the City game, he wasn't fit, so couldn't, by the COVID protocols, have travelled to the game. He'd have been sat at home in Formby watching us get tonked on Sky like everyone else.

He shouldn't have put the picture on of him on the plane, it was daft, properly stupid thing to do. The club gave him permission to leave though so, as ever, your anger should be directed at the right people.

Yes mate, he should have been there for the Wolves game and I agree it's on the club to insist he attends, specifically Ancelotti.

Footballers who play at the highest level live in a bubble. In James' case, he's a national icon in Colombia, so has become a massive celebrity with a huge social media following. He's treated like a rock star there. No English player has ever had that level of adulation, so it's something we can't fully comprehend.

Football means everything to the people of Colombia. This is a country where a player was murdered five days after scoring an own goal at the World Cup. Has all the adulation turned James into a bit of a primadonna? Maybe, maybe not, but you could understand if it had.

Ancelotti didn't do him any favours with his "He's a bit tired" comments before the Wolves game. In fact, I was scratching my head all season at some of his pre-match injury updates. The information he gave was often puzzling, misleading or simply incorrect.

Watching James for the Sheffield Utd game, he looked completely unfit and I was surprised he was kept on the pitch for most of the game. The Wolves game was three days later, so Ancelotti should have just said James wasn't fit enough to play two games in three days and his dodgy calf wasn't up to it. In fact, he should have just selected him, but put him on the bench.

Even if he wasn't selected for the Wolves game, the club should have made sure the whole squad was there. One could argue James should have wanted to be there, and that's fair enough because, traditionally, the last home game gives the players the opportunity to thank the fans for their support during the season, and for the fans to appreciate the players efforts.

However, last season was a strange season like no other. There were no fans. Even for the couple of games that did have a few fans, James didn't play, so he never had the opportunity to connect with fans in any way. Maybe if he'd experienced that he'd have wanted to be there. Maybe not. We'll never know.

I understand why people are annoyed by some of his behaviour, but bearing in mind the slightly bizarre bubble he lives in and putting into context all of the above, I'm prepared to be magnanimous about him.

What's important now is getting behind the team and, if selected by Benitez, getting behind James, too. It's what he does on the pitch that really matters.

Few extra shirts aren’t going to cover his wages.
to make a real commercial success you need to sell millions of shirts. To do that you need European success and x-factor players
You missed the point about my post. I was talking about exposure and that’s definitely more valuable than shirts. I was just pointing out that I didn’t buy a James shirt because I’m here for the long run.

The exposure is far more important tbh, shirt sales are outsourced through Fanatics so we don't make anything from them (i don't think)

I agree, Simon. That was exactly my point, the exposure that James has brought to the Club has been tremendous and more valuable than the sell of shirts. I just wanted to clarify that I had not purchased a James shirt but a Sassy one ;)

No, not at all. The club brief is from the club. My point about Benitez was totally separate. I find it a weird coincidence how Red journos suddenly have access to information they have not had until now before, is all. But those stories were very much separate to the stuff about James' wages which has been pushed all summer. I'm really not sure how you've taken that from my post just because it's now your default to jump to Benitez's defence? It wasn't even a criticism of him.

You don't know if he'll adapt or not because we haven't yet seen it. One because of isolation, then two because we were trying to loan him out so he was never going to play v Brighton. Let's see if he's involved v Burnley, if he's still here.

lol

No, you just casually mentioned since his arrival here some journalists are getting info pushed their way.

As for my "default position" defending Benitez: my position is that he's here to do a job and will get support for that, and if he cant do the job I'd want him out.

I think we both know it's you who holds the extreme position on Benitez.
