2021/22 James Rodriguez

It's a stat which looks at the moments leading up to goals, so includes things like dribbling into the box and then another team mate scoring, winning a foul that is then scored, pens, or a key pass that leads to a goal.

Which I think seems like a good way to look at a creative midfielder's conributions, along with goals obviously.

Just cannot wrap my head around how people think he's not productive enough. Not right for the team, lazy, etc. I can agree with.

Not even sure I agree with the lazy shout tbh.

He just hasn't got the legs to make up the ground in the Prem. But that's not actually a worry if you play him right.

I've been solid on this all along - he's wasted central in English football. Needs to be on the right of a front three or as a narrow forward in a 3-4-3 type system.

But that brings with it its own issues, and one of those issues (well, the major one) is that we've not signed a RB despite one being needed for the last 3 seasons.

I think James was worth the £200k a week when we had Ancelotti.

I don't think he's worth £200k a week now we have Benitez.

You have to respect managerial approaches and let them get on with it. It's nobodies fault, nobody has done anything wrong in this situation IMO.
A good summary of the situation whatever wage he might be on.

Also stats are so annoying in this thread in particular. James is a boss footballer, if you can’t see it I don’t understand how you can be a football fan. I’m sad he’s leaving but encouraged by the all action performance the team gave on Saturday and I can see how he wouldn’t be able to do that, even though I’d find a way to fit him… I’m not a millionaire premier league manager though so what do I know?

I don't think the player or manager have. I do get a bit worried who the manager sees as his replacements but we'd wait and see on that...

I do think the club have to take responsibility for where we're at financially though. COVID is a caveat, fully, but we've had three years to shift players, three years to get players for key positions in (RB, RW were both needed in 2018-19, for example), and haven't done it, meaning we're in a position now where we need to a) shift players to get those key positions filled and b) get the signings absolutely right with no room for mistakes which, in the right-back case, is of vital importance.

Some rhubarb there, if players do not want to go they cannot be made to for example look at Tosun, similarly to get the right players one has to think of that FFP stuff. It is not as easy as you seem to think. It is not just Brands, but look at the managers we have had and their signings. Koeman was the worst .

It's a massive issue though mate - saturday was so refreshing to not have to see one of the three slugs of James/Gomes/ Gylfi strolling around being a defensive liability.

We need energy and pace and those three leave us all over the place when not on the ball.

You hate it now but in time you'll come to love it.

I don't think everybody does think that you need one to succeed.

It doesn't mean you celebrate when a player of James' quality leaves here though.

Im more happy he's leaving because it likely means we can bring 1-2 in potentially.

At present him and Kean are nooses around the clubs neck - rightly or wrongly they dont suit the system going forward and both need to go to allow us to bolster the squad with quality who will suit what we are trying to build.

Ironically if we are going to play 442 then Kean suits the system exactly.

I mean we were absolutely awful in the first half and played well for about 30 mins in the second mate

Hang on. It was part of Brands' remit. I'm not saying it wasn't hard, but it was still part of his job.

And now, it's actually players brought in under his tenure which are the main issue.

Bernard, £120k, just shifted. Delph on near £100k, Gomes on £120k. Even Mina, who I really rate, was given north of £100k...

We can't absolve him of the responsibility. Ultimately he is the one constant.

and @Bebeto hmmm, depends if the players have been fully vaccinated

I guess a lot of them won't have been.

The rule change only applies to those with two vaccine does, and if they were at least two weeks previous too.

So for example, only people who were double vaccinated by/on August 2nd/3rd would currently not have to legally isolate if they were a contact of someone who had tested positive
That would be really bad PR if we have players that are not double vaccinated at this stage...or even single dose vaccinated...

Not having that at all mate - first 20 minutes first half we were the better side then Keane cocks up and has us under the cosh - pretty much on top for most of the second half as well imo.

You just have to ask what would James have done to make a 3-1 win that much better?

Couple of long passes to Digne nothing if anything would have had us on the backfoot as we wouldn't have been able to get forward as much with Doucoure needing to babysit him defensively.
