"Never stop Believing" is a pretty wet motto for a club as big as Altetico imo

Now, "nothing but the best is good enough" that's a proper motto

Maybe he is just a big Journey fan but forgot it was don't stop believing. Reckon he has the vocals of Steve Perry

That's what has been widely reported recently, and it's plausible as he decided to leave Madrid where he was on ridiculous money. He could have sat there, maybe went out on loan and picked the money up, but we had to put up a certain level of wage to attract him; Ancelotti had pull for him but not enough to make him quarter his wages IMO.
So, if he's on or around 200k a week here, which club is likely to match it? If he took a pay cut to come to Everton will he be prepared
to take another one? After all, he is 30 and he does, and always has missed a lot of games through even soft injuries.

Me, I'd love him to stay here even if he doesn't play 90 minutes every week because he's so good. And will Everton win more matches without him than with him?

Some people don't commit every clubs motto to memory.

Also it's not that crazy to imagine he'd just say that phrase. I look forward to DCL tweeting out a pic that says "Prepared" and everyone flipping out that he's joining Villa.
I doubt he knows one club motto.
They're all meaningless gibberish.
'Dont stop believing'
'nothing but the best'
'leave no man behind' they're like kids twitter hashtags.

And there we have it, article in the Athletic this morning with the charm offensive (though it's a good article from Paddy B).

Basically saying what a lot have said on here that he just won't fit.

I get it, I do, but it's absolutely mad. Again, Everton – one extreme to the other, never capable of finding any balance, never capable of playing the middle ground.

We're just going to rely on crossing, nothing else. That's the plan. And when that plan fails...

Disregarding a player of James' quality for the year he has left is, in my mind mental.

And it comes down to previous mistakes in recruitment meaning we can't afford that luxury of having a world class player able to drop in and out and actually help push us on.

People have already convinced themselves that he doesn’t track back, he’s lazy and won’t run through brick walls.

The School of Science no longer exists, good footballers are not welcome here.

I think the numbers back up that he's not a tough tackling midfielder. But he does track back, he just hasn't got any legs to do it quickly. But people can conveniently forget how, for example, much he helped Godfrey in the home derby last year, making some big interceptions and basically sitting on top of the lad for the first 30 mins they were on the pitch together.

I just don't see why that's needed from him - the tackling part - as a priority.

A simple solution, for example, would be to play 4-3-3 in games we have James available for, and against teams it suits. That could well be 20 games, but managing his gametime better would see him be available to come off the bench etc and provide some world class quality as teams tire. In a 4-3-3 with an athletic right-back and powerful, ball carrying midfielder brought in, suddenly the lack of tackles doesn't matter. Put Allan - wasted and incapable as a six - on the right to cover the space, and that's a job he could do. Have a midfielder in the middle to get on the ball and Doucoure is your left sider who pushes on. That's a template which can be worked with and shifted - that's good coaching, being adaptable.

But no, we've decided we are now a crossing team. That's fine, but what else are we capable of? Erm? Well, nothing. Hit and rush footy. Surely, having a player that can produce genuine moments of world class quality every game (and there isn't actually one game that James played in that I can't remember him not producing something that none of our other players would come close to) can only help you.

The reason ultimately comes down to finances though and that's more where the frustration lies for me. We've cocked up so much in the last 5 years, and the 3 under Brands included too, that we can't afford to go and get that RB and CM without shifting James, because for some reason our DoF is incapable of selling an Italy international who at 21 scored 18 goals for PSG last season, a midfielder with Barca pedigree (because we handed him £120k weekly wages) and reckoned it was sensible to give Delph nearly £100k a week.
