I mean I can see what you're talking about, and I can also see the sheer volume of shots we've conceded in matches and wonder "what if more of those go in?"

Unfortunately, it’s Premier League football and teams are going to have shots regardless of how good defensively we are. Teams have shots against Man City. Are these shots coming from our own defensive errors? I would suggest not.

One fun thing about this forum is the absolute certainty with which people will claim they're right based on nothing but what they saw

I think you will find that is life, rather than just a forum.

Also, is that a bad thing, to have a strong opinion about what you have seen on a football pitch, rather than consult the stats and then decide what your opinion is.

As I mentioned above, I think we are defending as an 11 a lot better than we have in the past few years. We may or may not concede more goals but how did those goals come about.

This is where numbers matter right? Because I can look it up and see we've conceded more shots per game than anyone else and say that's bad but I'm not allowed to do that because you've seen us position ourselves well and also City concede shots too.

That's not all a CB problem btw, I'm glad to take this to the Lampard thread. But it also doesn't not involve the CBs.

It's not bad until you start to say the numbers are fake and don't matter because you saw it and your eyes are better. At some point you're fighting reality. I'm not saying anyone is at that point.

See, you’re just using numbers again to try and prove that our centre backs aren’t doing their jobs. It’s pointless arguing with someone that doesn’t watch football and just keeps referring to stats as the basis for their entire argument. A shot at goal could come from 45 yards out and sail into row Z, it goes down as a shot at goal on your stupid spreadsheet.

How many clear cut chances do the opposition create against us? Because Newcastle for example barely created one despite having 12 “shots at goal”, their goal didn’t come from an actual chance.

If you absolutely must use WhoScored to base every single one of your footballing opinions on, then at least dig a LITTLE bit deeper. Likewise don’t look at the 2018/19 league table goals against column and then tell me our centre backs were solid, and actually go back through some highlights from that season and watch how the goals happened.

One thing in football analysis is the saying 'they have limited them to long shots'. This is seen as a positive statement, a lot of the time. So, if we look at the stats, where are those shots from. The problem I see with focusing on stats is that you have to look at multiple sets of stats to gain any semblance of what is going on and even then, there will be some stats missing to give you a true picture.

Somebody will always say, I saw the game and I have a different view, i.e. I can see that there were 50 shots on goal but the defenders came out and put the player off really well, there is no stat for that. Maybe the player blocked and we have a number but if a player is running at you or showing the player onto a wrong and they shoot wide then that cannot be seen.

We can dig deeper mate, the numbers will not get much better.

This is what I mean though, you're certain you've seen good defending and it really doesn't matter to you what anyone else sees or provides, your eyes saw it.

It is funny though because people make fun of xG and then bring up a bunch of whatabouts that it actually does factor in. I don't particularly like it because it's been completely bastardized but what if the guy is closely marked isn't such a complex question that a bunch of smart dudes didn't think to ask it down the years.

Oh go on then, by all means.

- How many defensive errors have we made this season?
- How many clear cut chances have we conceded?
- How many shots has Pickford had to save in relation to recent seasons?
- How many aerial duels have our centre backs lost?

Please provide me with these all encompassing numbers, and show me why I should stop believing what I see on a football pitch in favour of your nonsense set of digits.

I'd like to know average distance of shot please.

These are answerable questions, but I'm not going to do it.
