Millwall, Newcastle away and Spurs at home that season. Yes what a rock solid partnership, felt incredibly safe with them.

Anyone rating Michael Keane….

That first half season though I thought Zouma had been told to play sweeper or something. I’d never seen a centre back 5 yards deeper than the rest of his defensive line, following runners across the box, the absolute shambles at every set piece. It was like he went to centre back school for beginners during the Christmas holidays and came back knowing how to play the position.

And yet those were are two most used CBs in a year where we were better defensively than any since. Also finished 8th. So maybe it wasn't that bad?

Maybe you missed the bit where I said he wasnt Nesta.

I dont think anybody is claiming hes totally perfect, but hes playing very well.

I just thought you would have the grace to hold your hands up and admit you called it wrong.
I suppose there’s a first time for almost anything!

Wasn't that the season we played with 4 centre halves on the pitch and just sat in our half?

Nah, Silva season. I have seldom seen a defence as all over the place, it was a car crash. However people (Americans) look at a few games towards the end of the season and see that we won a few games to 0 at home and think our defence must’ve been boss. I can never unsee Newcastle and Millwall away, show me a worse defensive display since and I’ll be impressed.

Haha what, no. We were absolutely calamitous defensively. Again this points to you looking at a set of numbers rather than watching actual football matches.
It's weird because I watch the matches now and also don't think we're that good defensively but I'll be told I'm wrong for that because look at how few we're conceding.

Im gonna regret this, but if you dont concede many goals, does that not mean that you are good defensively?

What am I missing?
I more or less agree but I'm being told it isn't ok to think we were good defensively in the past just because we didn't concede a lot.

But if I try to apply that to this season and say when I watch I think we're riding our luck a little people will tell me I'm crazy because we aren't conceding goals.

I just want to know which it is.

Its nice that you realise you dont have a clue.

Thats real growth.

Proud of you.

This is the best I have seen us defensively for a few years, what I mean by this is we are defensive as a team while still trying to look to be on the front foot. It hasn't always looked like that, but you can generally see this in the way we have played.

I think defensively we were better under Ancelotti, that period of away games where we just defended the box was a masterclass in the defensive positioning and concentration. However, we never really tried to get out.

This season, I have generally found that we are defending as a unit of 11 players while still trying to break away effectively, all 3 central midfielders get up and down the pitch. That for me is being good defensively.

I think the level of leadership at the back is a massive factor as well, Tarkowski & Coady are constantly talking & leading, with the added factor that we have a more mature presence in Pickford. I don't think we have had this level of leadership experience, for a very long time, especially if you add Coleman in for the last few games.
