Roberto Martinez has ruled out signing a winger before the end of the transfer window.

And the Everton FC boss is backing the on-loan Christian Atsu to give his Blues career lift-off when he returns to the side.

Atsu has helped Ghana reach the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals and produced a man-of-the-match display in their deciding group game against South Africa.

The 22-year-old has struggled to make an impact at Goodison Park after sealing a season-long loan from Chelsea in the summer and a miserable first five months at the club were compounded when he picked up a hamstring injury in December.

Everton have been linked with a number of players who could bolster their options in wide areas but Martinez is happy with his lot and believes a fully fit and firing Atsu can have still make his loan move a success.

“It has always been the plan that Christian Atsu will be an important player for us in the second-half of the season and so it was great to see him doing so well and his man-of-the-match award against South Africa,” said Martinez.

“He is a player who will come back strong and ready to have a big role.”

Everton have been linked with a number of wingers in the January transfer window but Martinez is content with the options at his disposal.

And despite the Blues being on a torrid run of form, which has seen them win just one of their last 13 games, the Goodison boss will not be looking to add in that position.

“I do think when Kevin Mirallas is fit and with Aiden McGeady - and the possibility of Ross Barkley and Steven Naismith to play in those positions - I think we are strong enough in those areas at the moment,” the Catalan said.

“But January, and any window, is always an opportunity where you can look to see if we can find specific characters who can help the players we have at the club, and we will always do that.

“I’m not saying we won’t try and work hard in January, we will, but we are not relying on spending money in January to find solutions when that would be a real gamble and a real risk.

“We have got the team, we know how well it performed last season and the group has more experience so it is finding that form back rather than spending in a window that we know is such a dangerous and difficult market to be involved in.”

"And the possibility of Barkley & Naismith to play in those positions..." - Because there both so effective when you play em there ay Bobby lad!

He's saying all this to the press but he's genuinely, 100%, looking at wide options. We'll sign at least one player before the deadline.
I would be very surprised if no one is signed/loaned. We need a new player or two for a number of reasons. If we dont sign anyone then it is very risky for the club to rely on the same squad. This squad with inconsistent performers trying to pull clear from the drop whilst trying to do well in Europe.

Im trying to be rational here, but if Bobby doesnt bring in one player to sort out the 3 glaring problems and 1 problem we would all like to fix then Im off the fn boat with him. Tie an anvil to me and just end it because him spouting 'theres not good value in January' is a load of crap. Right, because Lukaku was such a bargain in the summertime.

And everyone saying 'theres no money!', jebus, how on earth do you think we paid for Lukaku? Do you REALLY think we paid all the money up front? If not, then do you think the Sky money is being paid in dribs and drabs?

Where you getting this info from mate, Baz?

I hope we do make a signing or 2 as we need fresh legs to help out, but I can't see it.

We can hope mate, but personally I don't think we have got that kind of money this month.
We definitely have the money. 10 million isn't that much especially when you consider Eto'o's wages are now off the book however there's a lot of other teams in for him and well it's January and so far Martinez has given every indication that he doesn't see January as the best time to buy. All we can do is hope for the best.

Naa, £10m isn't much if you've got it, but do you seriously think we've got it? I don't. I've supported us long enough to know when we're verging on skint or are skint. I do think we've got a bit for a loan or 2 possibly or for a cheap permanent signing but I think it'll be in the summer when the next lot of tv money comes in that we'll have funds.

Can a mod ban me from looking at this thread please? I click on it hoping that someone will have posted credible information on new transfers but there's never anything worth reporting to the weird idiots that I know who aren't members of GOT. It's filling me with false hope and frustration. Not only that, it's making me look like a right dildo as I'm telling people that we're imminently signing David Bentley and Charles n'zogbia.

Thanks in advance,
markmarkmark

We can report/neg until your request is noticed, if that helps

Thing is, there is NO reason for us to be skint right now. And yes, I'm sure some (clearly hilarious and amazingly original) poster will put up a picture of Kenwright smiling smugly, but it simply isn't logical to believe we're completely broke.

Yes, we're a mess in terms of our commercial operation, but the insane amount of TV money that comes in these days, coupled with the players we've sold over the last 18 months should mean we have - not massive, but some reasonable amount available to invest in the squad.

Probably there is money, but a specific (and small) amount that can be used for transfers, limiting RM's options. When he says he doesn't think the January window offers "value," he's looking for someone that won't be available until summer and knows that if he spends now he might not be able to get the target(s) he really wants. That's my optimistic interpretation, but maybe the club is simply Out Of Cash.

If there's money and he's not spending it then that's equally as ridiculous as us being skint.

One way or another, something is ridiculous.

Never been more certain we'll sign someone.

Forget the wide player stuff, or even GK he keeps talking about. If you read Martinez's words carefully over the past few weeks he's always placed doubt on the need to strengthen in either of those two areas right now. One place he has clearly identified as weak and incapable of being solved in the remainder of the season is a creative force in the midfield. He's stated a number of times that Osman and Pienaar aren't realistically going to make it back this season and I reckon with Eto'o gone everything is going on a search for a playmaker.
