I just think we didn't wanna pay 20 mil for him as there is no evidence to say he can make it in the PL and that's why we wanted to loan him instead

What if the buy back option was requested by united to us and Lyon ? if so then im happy we didn't go through with it, imagine giving Depay the world at his feet, then he goes back to united for say £20m after gambling £15 to sign him.

Pretty much agree with this. However, I think if signings are available, it'll be wise to get them in now over the summer because it'd allow us to really attack next season, going into it with a settled squad fully of actual quality for the first time in ages. I feel we need a CB, a GK, a WG and a ST. If we could get two of those in and two in the summer, that'd be perfect.

I agree to an extent. But if the players we want are not availible until the simmer i would much prefer us to hang fire for any long term target instead of just getting someone we didnt want as our origianal targwt. E.g keane or pickford

I think it would be extremely naive not to sign a top center half and just rely on the youth. We have not secured 7th and we still need to try and push for 6th. Jagielka is gone legs wise, holgate still young and funes mori still has to improve on his positional sense. We need a cb in there's no question about it for me.

Pennington needs a loan, Galloway isn't good enough to be a starter at center half and we dont have enough quality there.

Its just as important as the striker for me.

Didn't think about this, Galloway in a back three on the left side ? It may work wonders with him having baines and Williams either side ?

Obviously been a stipulation of United selling him that they had a buy back clause so no surprise we pulled away from the deal.

Are we sure getting rid of dead wood is actually all that useful right now? I thought wages were limited to 7 mill above last seasons, or a certain amount above 4-5 years ago(but we are already above that amount)? In that case, maybe its to our advantage to have an artificially inflated wage bill this season, as high as we can, then cut all of the dead wood in the summer and that gives us more room to sign better players. Granted, the difference wont be huge, but couldnt it be 1-2 million in wage bill?
I would reckon they wont be able rid them this window anyway. They all could just sut out their contract. At least mcgeady is still trying to play football. Gibson prob works off his hangover in finch farm and is happy doing that for another year

We're not achieving anything this season so I can see why there's no point in just signing 2nd/3rd choices. It could be argued if we bought 4 great players we could still make a late push for champions league but I doubt that would happen.
We don't want to stockpile our squad with a load of players who would be pushed down to bit part by next season, because we'd be stuck in the same place as we are now.
Just hope it's not a missed opportunity with regards to the mini transition of the teams above us. At least we know Liverpool will be a team we can overtake next season because their squad is too weak for Europe and the league.
