If the rumors about Virgil Van Dijk's release clause are true, we should be throwing that money at Southampton as soon as possible. He's exactly what the backline needs, and would be a perfect partner for Williams, just as Williams is the perfect partner for Van Dijk. Fair enough, did seem a little too good to be true. If it proves to be untrue, the signing probably won't happen, as there are too many more important holes to fill around the pitch to justify a massive fee at center half.

Fonte is 33. We don't need another defender that will be around for a couple of years. We need someone to build up alongside Williams and Jagielka who will then be the older head for Holgate etc.

I was really thinking about how this looks to the rest of the squad. If you were replacing Jags with VVD or some young hotshot centre half, that would be one thing. Unceremoniously binning him off after almost 10 years of service for a stopgap solution might send the wrong message.

That may be true but I rate Fonte myself. He's better than Williams who is a bit of a clumsy sod really. The Euros saw his stock shoot up but he's average a best imo.

I'd have absolutely no qualms at all about sending this message to the squad tbh. The amount of absolute shithouse performances they have put in over the last 2 years, I actually think it's the sort of message they need. Mediocrity won't do anymore.

I think those performances need to be separated into "used to be good but can't do it anymore" and "couldn't be arsed to put in a shift." The second one, be absolutely ruthless. The first one might be a bit more delicate.
