January Transfer Thread 2020

The noises out of the club aren't too positive for this window. FFP rules are a real concern just when our club needs a fresh injection of quality. January is notoriously a difficult window to buy players at the right price. Record losses for this financial year mean we will be restricted to one or two loans at best. We have to make these loans count so we can finish strongly in the league. Finishing in the bottom half will not look good. A solid 7th, 8th or even 9th will give us a platform to spend and improve in the summer. However, in order to be allowed to go after any loan players, we will be required to raise some capital. That will mean loaning out some of our own because it will be unlikely we will be able to sell them, due to their underperformance on the pitch.

Please Everton, loan us a dynamic midfielder and a strong ball-playing centre back!

Yes , we need 2 or 3 of those like you say but not in this window and in the whole should be buying potential.. We will prob have to get rid of 2/3 of the ones on big money first which may prove tricky.

Its a shame we arent a little further up the board points wise, i would of used this season to try a few kids and experiment with different formations etc..

...nothing new there, they’ve been running that one for a few days. Sigurdsson’s wages, age and outstanding contract period means he will take a bit of shifting unless Steve Walsh now has a job elsewhere!!
I always refer to the MLS. Each team has two "Designated Player" roles on the team to where they can pay out the WAZOO for the guy. Would love for one of those teams to pick him up. Would be world class in that league.

There's talk of Modric going over there this month.

Hopefully, if someone like him is going there when he's still pretty decent, we can con someone into taking our wasters.

Not so much that we don't have the ability to play one touch passes, but there is a definite lack of technical ability in the squad. There are very few players who are comfortable getting the ball under pressure, and even fewer who are capable of actually getting past that pressure and opening the game up. To me this is our single biggest issue, we lack players with the ability to have a big impact on games. We don't score many goals because we're only capable of scoring from gilt edged chances (and not always even then) and the players know this, meaning they very quickly lose confidence when they go behind as they don't believe they can score enough goals to get back into the game.

It's funny as I popped in another thread that that Chirevella put in the sort of performance on Sunday very few of our midfielders can do. he was mobile, had awareness of what was around him and used the ball well. Essentially just kept the game ticking over. Essentially the ability to control the ball, get your head up and pass the ball forward to a teammate. It's a fairly bog standard skill but I'm not sure any of our players really want to do that.

Totally agree. Every single good performance we've put in over the last 18 months has had Gomes at the heart of it, because he's the only one capable of playing that way. Unfortunately even he can't seem to do it consistently.

Yes, and I mean Gomes carries the ball very well as well. I don't think he actually distributes the ball as well as Chirevella did though. I mean he would take the ball on the half turn, and pass it forwards. It sounds very simple and he is really a championship level footballers, but worryingly seems to have the skill set many of our midfielders don't. And thats not just a knee-jerk from Sunday, in most of the games we watch he doesn't. Gareth Barry was the last guy I remember doing that for us. They obviously have other skills, but the above skill set is really the foundation of a central midfield player.
