What I don't get is why people ever thought this wasn't the case this month

Save the dosh until summer. When fit, we potentially have a midfield pairing of Gomes and Gbamin, with Bernard central, and a front three of DCL, Kean and Richarlison who will hopefully keep developing. If we're going to buy in any of those positions, they need to be top notch, no more journeyman. Our real issues are at the back, unless Pickford can stop playing like a chav, he needs replacing with a more stable keeper. Digne has gone off the boil this season but has the quality to recover his form. Right back is a position we need to improve, and above all we need a commanding centre back to partner Holgate or Mina. A couple of shrewd loans this window would be fine with me, we need to be patient.

No, I am merely making the point that there is a relegation battle involving about 10 teams, most of which have already or will look to strengthen this window. If we don't, we may be putting ourselves in a dangerous situation.

I agree with you, the players I mentioned are the ones I'd retain going forward. Any additions MUST be able to complement and add quality to this group of players. It certainly won't happen this window, hence patience is required.
