2020/21 Joao Virginia

Played well. Looked comfortable kicking with left or right foot. As the game went on the defenders looked confident taking the option to pass it back to him if they were pressed and he cleared the ball confidently. It will be good to see him for a run of a few games.

I was impressed with him. Couple moments of indecisiveness can be put down to his inexperience but there's a lot to like.

....as I keep saying, it’s not a matter of who’s the best. As far as I’m concerned it’s a matter of who’s the least worst. My idea of the pecking order is:

Pickford
Olsen
Virginia.

That says everything about Virginia but even bad goalies can have one of those games. If you’re old enough, you might remember Tomoshkvski (the Clown) for Poland v England.

Good point about there being keepers who can put in a 'worldie' performance (weve had enough against us).

However, I think in the first team games (so far) hes looked a better keeper than Olsen.

Im not going to get carried away with him based of 2.5 games though I am excited to see how he does over the rest of the season and whether he can cement the 2nd choice position.

My Reading supporting mate has told me he's garbage for years. Glad to see him play so well tonight.

I saw his early league displays for Reading and he was poor. Made a couple of howlers he never recovered from and was quickly dropped.

He was still in his teens then and he looked less physically imposing.

Who knows how he'll turn out for us, he was seen as a coup when we secured his signature and hopefully that'll be the case.

I am not convinced by him at all after the blooper the other week, BUT he at least deserves a shot just because of his kicking and his performance today. Considering we are not a team that dominates possession, we can’t have our keepers needlessly giving it away at every opportunity. Joao looks like he may genuinely be a ball playing keeper which is nice to have.

I’m all for giving people a chance so I’ll be rooting for him.

I do have some concerns that Reading sent him back from loan though.

We lived up in the South - East at the time Groucho about 20 mins from Reading, we knew a fair few Reading fans and they said they had never seen anything like him he was that bad, to be fair like he's still only a young lad.

If I remember correctly he basically had a clanger in both starts he got and that was it for him there as they weren't going to spend time waiting for him to get up to speed when they were always sending him right back.
