Joel Robles

Im going to say this very quietly as i could still be proved wrong and it seems there is a splt opinion in here wether Joel is good enough or not!

I think he could save us alot of money if he carrys on the way he does! Its been so long since we have had a keeper that comes for crosses (and gets them) i forgot what it is like.
I thought he dealt with the high balls into the air very well last night, and the rest of the team trust him!

1 of the most underrated goalies in the prem! Far to good to be anyone's no.2, so even if we do and get a big money goalie in the summer, Joely will probably be off

Hmm.

There's still quite a few flaws in his positioning IMO.

FWIW, though, he's been excellent for us recently. And I hope he keeps it up.

He's very good in the one on ones

Like who?
The ones who are a step up to Robles are the likes of DDG, Lloris.
Who is realistically going to come and be top quality and miles better?

I agree with this!
The likes of Pickford needs more games then people reel of these German or Spanish goalies who you have no idea how they will fair in the league. I really rated Karius and since seeing him at the RS abit more close up i can see a lot of flaws in his games. I saw Timo Horn come legging it out of his goal the other week and completely messing that up too! Are these goalies a significant step up from the holy Joely?

Maybe im getting a bit carried away. But bar the goal in the derby where he had only been on 15 minutes, he has done excellent.
I think my point is when do you change your mind from "he's playing well and in good form" to "he's a very very good goalie". And does Joel have enough time between now and the end of the season to stop us dipping into the market for a new goalie?

I think it is indefinable.

At some point in the 1983/84 season Neville crossed that same Rubicon and became a great goalkeeper without anyone noticing :(

Suffice it to say signing one of these rare "top class goalkeepers" has fallen well down our list of priorities in light of Joel's outstanding form of late.

So Joel might have already made the transition you outline in the bold bit ;)

At the moment I feel more comfortable with him between the sticks than I have done. If he continues playing this good we wont need a new keeper as number 1.

It looked bad but I think it was just unlucky and I don't think he did anything wrong. Our defenders standing still while Mane strolled past them was the problem.

Being really picky anyone think he could have been braver with the goal? Feels like he went towards the ball, hesitated then decided to try and save the shot whereas if he'd just fully commuted to smothering it he could have got it but almost certainly been booted by Crouch too.

He was pretty poor against Hull for their second goal IIRC, totally screwed up the wall and his positioning, though it was an excellent free-kick from Snodgrass.

And last night, there were just a few times (inc the goal) where he seemed to rush out and then hesitate.

But he's getting better and I'm happy with him as GK for the rest of the season, at least.

Yeh I think he got stuck in no man's land.

Not particularly his fault, but he never really needed to rush off his line in the first place.
