John Stones transfer saga

Well lets put it this way, City came for Lescott not Jagielka.

No club pursuing top honours would move for Jagielka.

Jagielka has been a far better player than Lescott over the last three seasons.
Lescott never really prospered at Man City and is being shipped out to one of the Premier League nonentities.

No, but I expect them to move up the gears fairly fast and start the process early in a window when the selling team needs to get in replacements and allow them to bed in.

Window opens 1st July
1st Stones bid 20m July 17
2nd bid 25m July 29
3rd bid 30m Aug 17
4th bid (?) 37m Aug 25

By contast City
1st Sterling bid 11th June of 25m plus addons
2nd bid 28th June 35.5 plus addons
3rd bid 10th July 44m plus add-ons
Sterling City player 12th July

John was never going for less than a record fee for a defender ie >32m, the board would have been slaughtered.

Since Stones was apparently their prime target this season it is strange they started so late - last year Costa was and they had him signed on the 1st July.

They thought they could bully us into selling at the lowest price possible. They were probably gobsmacked when we knocked back £30 million. They've messed this one up big time. That's why Jose has a face that looks like a smacked arse when he's questioned about it now.

Fwiw this is what someone posted on the Shed end - given he confuses a simple issue like Browning/Galloway it is unlikely the rest of it is any more accurate.

I did say that I would stay off this a couple of days ago, but I met an old schoolmate after the Spuds game last night, he now lives in South Africa but comes back a few times a season. He has made a fortune in SA and his company has sponsored Everton for a long time, he's obviously well connected within the club and after a few jars told me what he knows about the Stones situation.

We did agree a deal before the City game, but Browning's injury changed things, Martinez had Mori lined up and with Browning being a CB (he was covering at LB for Baines) he thought we had enough cover and was promised the Stones money for a few signings. He told the board that if the Stones deal went through he would be off, the board caved in, which angered Chelsea and Stones agent threw a fit, pushed him to put in a TR to force it through, which then meant that Kenwright had to go public and say he's not for sale. Bottom line is that Stones is ok with staying for now, but has assurances that he can go, maybe as soon as January. The story about the Barnsley sell on is rubbish and he moved out of home to get away from the media, there may be one or two neanderthals hanging around, but it's the press he's trying to get away from.

Strange atmosphere at WHL yesterday, Spurs fans booing Stones and a few kids singing a Beatles song, all a bit embarrassing but nothing malicious at all. It was odd that Stones came over and clapped us at the end, we weren't quite sure what to make of it. I still think there may be a twist in the tale, but it will probably depend on Martinez being placated somehow. For all those having a pop at RM he's only doing his job and is being pinned down on Stones every time he's anywhere near a microphone (which is too often for my liking).

Appleton was the old company, he floated and sold it then started another business called Warwick, they advertise around the ground and sponsored our cup campaign last season. Whenever he's over he sits in the directors box and mixes with the great and good, doesn't get on with Kenwright but that's another story. He was only passing on the gossip he has heard, probably rather more informed than the rest of us though. The only point he was unclear on (could've been the wine), is whether Stones was always going to put in a TR as part of the deal (to make our board look good), or if it was in response to us backing out, but Stones' agent is not a happy camper whatever. it helps that Stones is not doing (and won't apparently) a Berahino/Sterling/De Gea

The most accurate part of that load of nonsense is the reference to Browning's injury.

Assuming he meant Galloway, no chance we would have used Galloway as our main back up centre back and Mori as a starter, neither of which have had experience playing CB in the prem before. We would have 100% bought another CB if we'd sold Stones. That alone makes me think this is a load of rubbish.

Also I'm pretty sure Celsea's mouthpiece Matt Law had already suggested Stones was going to hand in a TR before the City game, since he said Chelsea were waiting for Stones' 'response' before bidding for a 4th time.

hilarious... had a 'few jars' then told an incredibly detailed account of a complex deal that our hero remembers also in very specific detail. the things you get up to on a saturday night

FFS stop it. Just stop it with the jarg rumour-mongering.
Is it any wonder Stones is sitting in some jarg motel sobbing his face off in the dark?
Let's just stop posting here everyone.

This thread is to be closed the same effing second the transfer window closes.

Agree, not even a reference to Van Dijk or Evans.

If Martinez prior to the City game had been happy with a backline of Coleman, Jags, Mori, a half fit Oviedo with Browning and Galloway covering all four positions (given Hibberts and Baines injuries) going into a run that contained Spurs, Chelsea, Liverpool, Utd, Arsenal and Swansea in the next 7 games he'd need his head testing!
