John Stones

The boys quality, great CB and decent RB, wasn't great this weekend, but look at the rest of the team, harsh to single him out, can remember plenty of quality moments from him last year, don't let one game rewrite your memory of him, he was getting rave reviews from all sensible Evertonians last year for good reason.

Eh? He was better than Thiago Silva a few days ago and suddenly he's not ready?

He was poor Saturday and isn't a right back but come on. I wouldn't start him with a fully fit back four, but he's easily good enough to step in and I'd think about him in defensive midfield for a couple of 'easier' Europa League games.

People need to get off his back, he is a centre half, not a right back!

He was covering for Coleman against Leicester and got caught out for the goal not doubt about it, but he was covering in the middle for Distin and thinking like the centre half he is. Had Distin been where he should have been Stones would have been marking Wood and it wouldn't have happened.

It did happen though, no point pointing the finger, we defended badly all game.

To blame Stones is wrong though, he was playing out of position. For me, our worse defender was Distin.

Stones has to play centre half he is better than Distin, he and Jagielka are our best partnership, not doubt!!

This will be delightful vaulting.

The lad is class. He will be one of the best in Europe. He's 20 and playing the position that takes the longest to learn. His mistakes are magnified because they can lead directly to goals.

He's not one of our best two CB's today, because he's 20, but I'd much rather have him step in than Alcaraz. Patience is required when you don't have money. We can't buy the best CB in the world today, so it makes sense to wait for ours to develop into a player of that caliber.

Hello all Im. A new member on the forum,

John Stones was completely at fault for me for Chris Woods goal, Mirallas loses the ball and doesn't track back, at this point Wood makes his way into the area with his hand in the air, Stones sees him and knows there's nobody else around him so he must know he has to stay there. Mahrez makes a run with the ball towards Jags, McCarthy, Coleman and Barry, there's no reason for Stones to go over, Stones drifts away from Wood leaving him in acres of space and leaves him with no option but to bury the ball in the net.

Stones was like a rabbit caught in the headlights

Good work Dave, popcorning at its finest here.

Stones is class and the composure he shows at his age is phenomenal. Hes going to be a fantastic centre half for years to come and hopefully with us.
I haven't said he wont be. I've said he's got a lot of mistakes in him right now and it'll cost us. That's not to say he shouldn't be played. Just that he shouldn't be down on the starting line up week in, week out. Making a lot of errors in games isn't going to do his development any good.

As I said, to me he's better deployed elsewhere...and would be by Martinez if we weren't blessed with a lot of talented CMs at the moment.

Apparently I didn't, apologies. He's not ready YET. But not many defenders are at his age. Moving him forward won't help, if his positional sense in his natural position isn't up to scratch then it certainly won't be in a new position.

He'll learn to be a top centre half by playing centre half.
Yes, he will. But I consider us to be a top PL team. No other outfit of that nature would keep playing him if he'd made costly mistakes. They'd have him in and out. There's no excuse not to with us. We have Besic who can do that job and did it all last season for Ferencvaros.

I have to stress, he's potentially a great talent in a number of positions. You cant teach composure on the ball that he has at such a young age. But he needs bringing through gradually.

Personally I would like to see him getting more game time by replacing Distin.

Agreed with this though. I don't think he will be. Coleman will be back, and Stones will be back to the bench. He'll play in cups, some in Europe, and when we have injuries.
