As someone mentioned on Twitter last night, the triple punishment for a foul in the box is nuts

You have a penalty awarded against you AND you get sent off so the team is a man down for the rest of the game AND you are banned for the next match. You get less for murder

........for me, a player shouldn't be sent off unless it's a deliberate or professional foul. For example, a keeper comes but the player gets a toe to the ball first and topples over the outstretched arm shouldn't be a sending off. A player goes around the keeper who drags him down should go off.

I couldn't argue with the Stones decision and I don't think @pablo 1878 is even though the ref was poor.

What's worse is that a genuine but ultimately failed attempt to win the ball can result in the triple punishment, but if anyone can recall Ruddock (I think) savagely hacking down a Bolton (I think) attacker who was clean through in goal but outside the box resulted in just a red and ban, no penalty.

The lads just amazing, rush of blood to the head last night and he made a booboo, aint no thing, hes still gonna be the best defender this country has ever seen.

20 years of age, camera shot last night, theres young John giving the whole team a gee up, an outstanding talent and a really good lad, hes got a wonderful future in the game.

Hmmm maybe, still think it was harsh. Don't think it would of been red in the PL 9x10.

Was a bizare ref. He seemed to enjoy the authority of getting cards out.

Strange game where stones gets a red for that and a player who nearly takes another players head off, which IF he'd connected could of killed him stays on the pitch.

I really think the other manager had been in his ear at half time about the 2nd and 3rd goals, and he spent the rest of the game trying to even things up.

He was busting to send at least one of our players off, the tit. Ah well, at least Stonesy can be rested for the 2nd leg!

No mate, you're right. Can't argue with the sending off as it's the rules

It's just the multiple punishment thing that is insane. I mean why stop with the red card, the penalty and the one-match ban? Why don't we make him do community service or flog him in public, Saudi-style?

Shame he wasn't signed earlier so that Moyesy could have given him some more defensive know-how before he left.

I don't know about how the UEFA will decide, but I've seen it a couple of times in the Bundesliga that those players who got red cards after tackling the attacker as the last man got more than one games if the ensuing penalty was missed. Of course this is not admitted, but it's awkward why they get two/three games when those in whose cases the subsequent penalty was taken did not (e.g. Jerome Boateng got initially a three game suspension for a similar tackle to Stones', which was generously decreased to two, but it was not at all violent or anything, just Manuel Neuer saved the penalty).
