John Stones

Stones will be the best english center half since bobby moore. you'd think jags was like matthaus in possession, he's dreadful on the ball, and stones is probably better in the air and in the tackle. Jags has the edge on being in the right place due his experience and reading of the game, but I honestly wouldn't be arsed if Stones played the rest of the season

I can see your logic on this, but overall I'm beginning to think we may be benefitting hugely from Jags' injury, in a weird way.

Yes, Stones has made a couple of mistakes but actually those mistakes have basically amounted to him taking a chance or two in possession whilst in defensive areas. His actual positioning, reading of the game, tackling, heading, marking, etc - the things you'd expect from a defender, have all been spot on. I'd struggle to think of a mistake he has made on that front.

Jags on the other hand, has equally made some mistakes in possession this season. Liverpool's 4th goal at Anfield is etched into my memory.

Stones, a couple of risks he has taken that weren't necessary aside, has helped us because his distribution is far better than Jags' (even though Jags' has improved a lot this season) - I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'd genuinely keep Jags on the bench at the moment if he regained fitness for next weekend.

I disagree about positioning and reading of the game. He's certainly there to assist in starting moves, but I dont remember him taking up great positioning when the ball is being run at us. To be frank, many times it looks a mess when he and Coleman are trying to get some understanding about who goes where. He's impressive on the ball and coming out from the back; he's still very raw at the defending side of that position.

He's still a bit raw and he was barely tested on Sunday. I like the lad and hes been impressive but the next Bobby Moore? Lets just see how he goes por favor.

Jags to come straight back in, but that's because he's Jags, our captain, and is boss. Stones has shown that he is going to be one hell of a player, but he is still on the learning curve

I suppose this isn't going to be one we can prove or disprove either way, and may be a matter of opinion.

Maybe I'm over-confident, but from a defensive perspective I can't remember ever having any heart-in-mouth moments with him.

Actually, that's not true - there were a number of occasions at Anfield, but he was playing at right back and I don't really count that.

He is, without a shadow of a doubt, the best defensive prospect I've ever seen at Everton for his age. He reminds me an awful lot of Rio Ferdinand when he was coming through at West Ham.

His biggest weakness right now is in the air, but he's usually got the better of the striker and is able to track back and tackle but it will fault him at one point. He'll only get better at that by playing though. If he was showing little promise and was being detrimental to us i wouldn't want him to be starting but he's making very good progress. Martinez will manage him like he has Barkley though which has been perfect so far. Barkley has made quite a few mistakes too but his rise has been brilliant, and i think a similar management would do wonders.

A few people have mentioned him having a weakness in the air,but in the West Ham game Cole was taken off because he was getting nothing in the air and Carroll coming on as sub got about the same.

Mate, with respect, I'd rather listen to a thousand tone deaf pigs squeal their way through the entire back catalogue of One Direction than hear what you have to say about football.

Thats the only reason people think hes good.

Stones gaining momentum while Jags is on the sidelines. A miscue or two but he is Barkley like coming out of defense and great talent and prospect. Future looks very bright for this kid. We always need youthful exuberance.
