John Stones

Great post. I don't completely agree with the analysis but the overall argument is correct.

Stones should have done better with last nights goal. He could have got there first, I'd have like to have seen a bit better challenge, but basically he got outjumped by someone who's prime strength is heading. In time I hope Stones will attack them a bit better and get there first (he was close).

There has been some criticism about allowing the cross in. I don't see that. Our biggest issue for me is how deep we are. When you play against Gestede you have to keep pushing the line out. Jagielka could do nothing with the cross but we should have been getting even further out and he should be marshalling that.

If we get 4 yards further out that ball flies past. It is hard work and requires a lot of shuttle runsup 5 yards at a time, but it is essential. As soon as the ball is knocked back Jags needs to be running forward and yelling "up".

As for Stones, he is having a difficult spell. He's a 21 year old lad, a baby for centre half. Give him time.

Cheers lad.

I agree that Stones could have done more, but it wasn't like it was all his fault and he came on in a situation where as a side we had sat deep and were looking sluggish (more as a result of our mid-season break than anything majorly worrying, IMO). He's been out for over a month and played in a strange position that neither him nor Jags grew accustomed to.

That's all there is yet suddenly it's back to 'he hates us, put him on the transfer list and get him in with the ressies'. He's one of the best players we've had at this club in 30 years, who would walk into most teams in the country and will very likely walk into a Pep Guardiola side if he does leave us this summer.

Can he improve? Of course he can, yes, and he's made mistakes and nobody will deny that. All this conjecture and pure media-fuelled speculation does my nut in though. We'll miss a player of his quality when he's gone, however much money we do get for him. Says a lot about a 21-year-old...

I'd sell him, comes on, gets out jumped concede a goal loads of pressure on us for last 20 mins. Great.

His heads gone imo and if he thinks he's so good he needs to prove it.

It's this type of knee jerking that is making the Everton matchday experience so unbearable for me at the moment. And that is coming from someone who has been unhappy with Stones performances and attitude for most of the season.

You do realise that Gestede is 6 foot 4 don't you and it was a cross that was perfectly placed for him to head it in?

I'm sick of our fanbase slaughtering the players for any slight mistake or when they genuinely get beaten by a good piece of play. Where has this attitude come from? I've been watching for 20 years and it's never been as bad as it is now.

I must have missed something, why is everyone suddenly saying Stones has been rubbish all season?

I wouldn't say he's rubbish, but 2 goals conceded in the last 5 games (I know it's 7, but stones hasn't played 5 of them) speaks for itself. He needs time to develop and gain situational awareness, but he isn't willing to put the time in with us anyway. I feel the whole Chelsea thing has possibly hindered his development.
