The rain, it raineth every day
Found a bottle of three year old quince brandy under the stairs. It's turned a lovely amber colour and tastes magnificently fruity.

Between the ground floor and the first floor, hope that helps.Whereabouts are these stairs?
Funnily enough we picked up a Mexican takeaway from a rum bar in Bristol a few weeks ago and had a glass each while we were waiting, Mrs d went for that, was really nice (better than my choice ), similar taste to Diplomatico, I guess that may be the Venezuelan style!Friday night had some Bulgarian rakia and some venezuelan dark rum (I forget the brand). Both delicious and a much kinder hangover the next day. If I'd drank the equivalent in beer I'd have been sofa-bound all day and questioning the point of my existence. So I think I'll be upping my spirit intake in future.
Edit: the rum was Botucal Reserva I think. Is that a good one @ste d' indica? I enjoyed it a lot.
Well the good thing about rum is, even if you pick one up you're not keen on you can lash ginger beer and a wedge of lime in it and it's not a total loss!
Rum tends not to be as wallet busting as scotch, you can get really fine examples for £30-40. It depends a bit on what your local stores carry in Germany. Kirk & Sweeney goes for about £30 in supermarkets here, that's excellent. El Dorado is pretty widely available, that's really good. Plantation's range are good but the taste profile varies a lot depending on where they have got it from. Black Barrel are good as well.
Be careful with spiced rums, some are fine but a lot are loaded with syrup, and basically a liqueur. That's ok if that's what you're after, but not very representative of good rum, anything with an ABV below 40% is likely to fall into that category.
My advice would be to try a half dozen different styles if and when you're out and see what you're into.
If you don't mind paying for postage from somewhere like The Whiskey Exchange or Master Of Malt (or a continental equivalent), you can't go wrong with Diplomatico Exclusiva:
Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva Rum : The Whisky Exchange
A fabulous Venezuelan dark golden rum, distilled from molasses in a copper pot still before it's aged for up to 12 years. Rich, sweet and fruity, just how we like 'em. Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva...www.thewhiskyexchange.com
It's a bit pricey like (£40), but it's just delicious, absolute nectar.
Nice one, I do see that now and again. Was making my gran's rum ball recipe earlier...picked this up on the way home on a blind buy, using some basic whisky knowledge. Absolute steal (considering prices of single malts) at $26 and a worthy sipper just neat (may have had a few while baking!), especially if you're primarily a single malt drinker. Can recommend whole-heartedly and I'm not super keen on rum as a drink...really surprised me.
Just polished off a Laphroaig Select...didn't have that lingering hit that the 10 year has but still a nice drop.
