Jonny Evans. Strongly linked by proper newspapers. Hmm.

Assuming he comes for, lets say, 6m upfront, then is he ?

Too many memories of the pointer Phill Neville perhaps?

Indeed.

The jury is already out on Tom Cleverley too, so signing another Utd reject is bound to cause a reaction.

Let's be honest, who hasn't heard the phrase, 'I'm sick of us signing Utd's rubbish!' (or words to that effect) at some point recently?

Let's not effing kid ourselves. There is no part of his ability or mentality that Stones doesn't already have in spades.

Evans has won plenty and will be a good mentor

To be fair.. im surprised united are letting him go. He's probly thier best centre back!

Seems the present manager has taken up exactly where the last one left off with regard to the United thing.

It's time we stopped being the retirement home for their players who they don't consider to be up to it.

I personally don't care where they come from, provided they are prepared to work hard for Everton. I want improvement, I don't want to be looking at the fixture list to see where points might come from so that we don't drop into the bottom three like I was last year. I don't think we can jump from where we are now to being a Champions League team but we can improve. Evans is no world beater but he is an improvement on what we had. We will have to see if he comes to us and at what price. I agree £8 million is a bit much for a player in the last year of his contract who, reportedly, won't be offered another contract. When you look at the money the club's around us are spending I am not sure one of them won't shelve out £8mill for him.

Has he played for us yet? Not sure if I should give him a clap rating or a boo rating?

In all seriousness, though. He's a decent enough player. Nothing great, but he seems to have been a part of squads that have won 3 premier league titles, and 2 league cups. Doesn't exactly sound too shabby as a third-choice.

I'm honestly a bit bewildered. So we're likely signing a player in the best years of their career. They're experienced in the league and have won titles and played relatively regularly for Manchester United. That suggests the player has something about them.

Evans like Cleverly has suffered the bad rep from that season under Moyes. The new manager has come in and is throwing money at a wall and hoping it sticks.

The 7/8million fee reported is a little expensive for a player out of contract in a year BUT the market for footballers, particularly English players is absurd.

I don't see how people can complain when we're signing a player of reasonable quality who could feasibly compete for a first team place in a position which desperately needed to be filled. For a pittance in this inflated market. And we have the player for his best years.

TLDR; Evans will be decent, people need to lighten up.

I've slated him in the past, but honestly I've not watched him like i'd watch a blue playing every week, and some united fan friends of mine don't think he's amazing, but he's solid.

As a premier-league experienced centre back, replacing Distin which is definitely necessary, he will be a great addition imo.

He'll play behind Stones & Jags in the pecking order, but injuries exist in football and as does bad form - Johnny can fill the gap and push for their position should we find ourselves in such a situation.

I'm for it

He was diabolical whenever called upon last year, nothing to do with LVG like you are trying to insinuate.

Haha I like it Joe!

He's not tne crock he's being made out to be and can be just as much a rough tough defender as we need. He'll be a good foil for Stones and able deputy for Jags as the season kicks in. At his age and with his experience its a good deal all round.
But his is injury prone Dougie and although he might be rough he certainly isn't tough.

Two important requirements of a CB are that he is reliably fit to start games and that once on the pitch he is going to see out the full time short of the occasional major injury. During his United career Evans has failed on both counts.

He failed to complete 90 mins in a quarter of the league games he started last year and although not as extreme as that in previous years he's had to be subbed mid game far more than Jags/Distin ever have.

Evans managed a run of 7 full league games only once in the past three years - he missed the eighth due to a groin strain. Compare that to Jags who even in Martinez's first season when his hamstrings were troubling him managed to complete 25 league games and only limped out of one. Heck even after coming back from his ACL Jags finished 11 league games on the bounce - last time Evans did that was 11/12 season and that was his only United season where he managed it.

Of course if he's an Everton player I'll support him but at 27 those injury problems aren't likely to improve.
