Very true. But he's only looked tosh when next to tosh. When he was with Vidic or Ferdinand he looked solid and more than capable. Obviously, Jags or Stones aren't as good as Vidic or Ferdinand in their prime, but they're better than most of Evan's defensive partners in the last two seasons.

As back up I think he's better than Alcaraz or Distin, which means we've improved in my book.

After hearing Salex ferguson talking about him once, every time Jonny Evans is mentioned my first though is "he's ball playing centre back" in a slightly grizzly Scottish tone. He's always looked fairly steady the games I've seen him and could be a useful signing if the money's right.

A 27 yr old centre half who's won the league several times and played in the Champions league pretty regularly ain't a bad buy. And in today's transfer market, £8 million really isn't a lot and we're not going to be paying that up front if the fee is that high.
