Jonny Evans. Strongly linked by proper newspapers. Hmm.

Assuming he comes for, lets say, 6m upfront, then is he ?

This back-up center back signing was likely to be the most controversial choice of transfer out of all of our business this summer. I have a feeling that whether it is Evans or somebody else, there will still be loads of us moaning about not signing someone more foreign with a bosser-sounding name. I do have the same concerns as everybody else appears to though, if the price is anywhere more than 4 million I would be disappointed. He only has a year left on his contract, he didn't start more than 15 games last year and at times was kept out of the squad by the inexperienced Blackett and McNair. He's also spent a lot of time injured over the last 3 years and the last thing we want to do is by the defender version of Gibson/Kone.

However, I'm tired of reading about Stoke's transfer rumors so I am now 100% all for this deal to go through.

If we would have signed ogbonna for the £12 mill West ham paid everyone would be raving ... about a defender who played in a rubbish Italian league and is no way whatsoever premiership proven.

Sign a proven defender in the premiership, won many trophies, part of a title winning side, costs a lot less ... everyone kicks off.

On the hand if the 8mill price is true we've been well and truly bent over by the mancs there.

I've no probelem with it if he's 3rd choice/backup.

But not at the expense of Stones. That'd be wrong.

Like everyone you'd assume he'd be coming in as a replacement for Alcaraz as the experienced back up but i wouldn't be surprised if he plays a lot more games than people expect.

If fit that is.

Keano said he is as hard nails so that's something. He said nothing else about him though.!!8 mil too much. 5 and it's a good signing. He can Defo do a job and will have the experience to push stones and jags which is what every team and player needs.

Even the original article says 'an eventual 8 million' (so if he plays lots, we win a cup or two and get into the CL we'll probably have to pay up to 8m for him - boo, hiss to that, eh?).

My main issue isnt the fee, (it wont be anywhere £8m up front), nor the fact that it is a bit of a boring transfer.

It is that an established, 27 year old, PL defender is seemingly happy to be 3rd choice. Unless the medium term thinking is as a Jags replacement/stand in.

Everton winning a cup or CL is not really an attainable add on. More likely based on appearances.

Roy Keane on Jonny Evans

Found it interesting to read what he said about Evans.

Jonny was a centre-half. He had the qualities of a Manchester United player, and he was bringing them to Sunderland. For such a young man – he was nineteen – he was very mature, and a born leader. Jonny was unbelievable for us. He lived with his mam and dad in Sale, near my home, so I picked him up there and brought him up to see the set-up at Sunderland.

I knew I was on a winner; I knew him, and I knew what he was about. I remembered an incident when I was still at United; there’d been a fight in the canteen and Jonny had looked after himself well – I think he knocked the other lad out. I knew Jonny was tough
