Jonny Evans. Strongly linked by proper newspapers. Hmm.

Assuming he comes for, lets say, 6m upfront, then is he ?

this thread should be kept in the archives as a reminder to us all what can happen in the close season and with internet rumours,I wonder who actually started it, come on lids, who dun it,had to be one of ours !!!?.

I think people were right to panic on this one though - widespread reporting with certainty about it, and who the player actually was, along with the crazy fee.

Suarez at Liverpool?

Certain positions are keystone elements of teams - United had built such a solid defence that they could attack at will.

Look at us last season because we didn't have players performing in the role they had to play in the system - like Lukaku and Barry. We fell apart despite little change in personnel.

I honestly believe Evans came a regular at United and a deterioration in how the played commence, as you suddenly didn't have that rock solid base. Like what happened with us when Alcaraz replaced Stones in Europe, but over the longer term.

But when ronaldo left utd they still continued to challenge.

I would think that because it was an ageing squad, the manager left, the chief exec left, all combined I'm sure with individual errors, impacted them.

Plus, the greatest manager that has ever lived, Ferguson, said this about him:

Ferguson says of him: "His form has been absolutely consistent over the past few months since he became a regular. Jonny Evans has always had fantastic ability, even as a kid. He was very talented as a boy when he came over here from Ireland at 12 years of age. We were never quite sure if he was going to be a midfield player or a centre-back – he was exceptionally talented but gangly with physical issues growing up. We had him out on loan with Antwerp and Sunderland and now we are seeing the value of nurturing him. With his height and pace and ability on the ball, he is really outstanding."

You're exaggerating massively mate.

Not saying he was the only reason, but one of the key reasons. They were falling apart before Ferguson left and it was sheer force of will from him and the squad that won him the last title. When Ronaldo left, United were a better overall unit and Ferguson simply shifted how they played to accommodate other talented players.

It just depends on how low you rate Evans really - I can see why people would disagree with the extent I blame him for United's relative demise, but it's a matter of opinion; I think Ferguson made a Djemba-Djemba sized mistake on selecting him at all when he wasn't cut out to play at that level.

Anyway, disaster averted, I'm happy.

Tbh, I'm very concerned (almost embarrassed) that the poll result is (as it stands) 39.1% think he'd have been a good signing.

And only 21% think he'd be a waste of money. 39.9% 'meh'

No wonder we've had kenwright for so long.............

Didn't whiskeyhooter wax lyrical about how he wished he never sold phil nevile to us?

The original source is the same paper that said baines to Utd was done a few seasons ago. They should now be on thew unreliable list with the likes of the mirror

It happens with every player we actually sign, no matter who it is, on GOT. Kone was the same, for example.

It's the 'support the players in a blue shirt' mentality; logic doesn't have much to do with it.

It's a good and bad thing, but it does mean polls lack any objectivity whatsoever on here!

haha what makes me laugh about this is the fact people are relieved yet have no idea who the third choice defender will end up being.

In a month or so there could be regrets that evans was the much better option and they hate the thought of the new man getting into the team.

My two cents, he was a defender that was part of a very succesful title chasing/winning team. He won cups, was first choice a lot of the time for Ferguson and is far more succesful and far more experienced at the highest level than anyone in our squad combined.

But lets sign scott dann eh? the championship knowledge may be useful next year........

I think there's more than that at play. Some journo's are very close to certain clubs and will do some work for them in return for privileges. So Baines didn't come off but the seed was planted, Baines must have thought about it and Utd were gauging our reaction, hence job done.

With Evans maybe it's a case of saying unofficially the lad's for sale to encourage offers.
