2019/20 Jordan Pickford

I understand both are priced at £85m+, so they ca stay where they are. Picky will remain England No 1 for another 6 months at least as there will probably not be any international games before late 2020. Leagues and cups are taking priority for the rest of the year.

I would guess that Pickford is very safe.
Just because some fans don't appreciate what a good goalkeeper he is doesn't mean the manager doesn't realise how good he is.
Pickford is still probably two to three years off his peak and has been playing behind a dodgy back four and midfield.
It doesn't matter who is playing the GK has to make saves and Pickford didn't do that at a high enough rate. Even putting the mistakes aside, and there were enough that they alone are a problem, he just isn't making enough saves. We had a run of games where teams were scoring over 50% of the shots on target.

I know most aren't a fan of stats but those are also very poor in Pickfords case. He's been as bad as it gets in the league aside from players who have been long benched.

I disagree here. Euro's being gone will see Henderson backed as Englands new number one I think; Southgate was in a bind with Pickford, who has always performed well for him, but has for sure gone backwards for Everton this year. The window of 12 months will see changes which wouldnt have probably applied this summer

Pickford made saves, loads of them , that isn't the problem.
The problem is the mistakes that he made. All keepers make howlers during the season, De Gea, Loris, even Alison and Ederson but the better keepers make fewer mistakes. The keepers making fewer mistakes play behind better defenders. I think De Gea is the classic example... as the quality of players in front of him declines his mistakes increase.
Better defending cut down the opportunities for attackers to take on shots and thereby cut down the amount of work a keeper has to do.

Pick the best keeper in the league, put him behind our back four and midfield and they would leak goals as well.

There is a reason that we all recognise we need a central defender, a right back and at least one central midfielder ,if not two...that reason is to balance our team and make our defending better more that it is to improve our attacking.

That’s not really true though is it otherwise he wouldn’t have the 2nd worst save ratio in the league.

And as for blaming our defence and midfield, though far from ideal especially the midfield, we still give up amongst the fewest chances in the league aswell as the second fewest shots from outside the area so it’s not like he faces a barrage of shots

Pickford's struggles have been independent of the defending.

I guarantee De Gea or Alisson would perform better than Pickford. Hell we get to see keepers like Guaita and Dean Henderson perform better with worse defenses.

I think we are kidding ourselves if we think 2019-20 Pickford has been anywhere near good enough for a top half side. If he gets back to the 17-18 form that made him the World Cup keeper or last seasons where he was genuinely solid we are fine, but two thirds of a season of not being that is a big problem. And the mistakes have always been there which is why he has to be a top class shot stopper.

Do you watch us play at all ? , did you watch the recent game against Chelsea ?
The Chelsea forwards had the freedom of the pitch to take shots at him, I have no idea where you get the stat that we give up the fewest chances in the league but from simply watching football it seems to me we give up plenty of chances.

you are right; he cannot take the majority of responsibility for the amount of shots he has to face; but he has to take the blame for the % of them he is saving & as far as I know that is the 2nd or 3rd worst in the PL.

Yeah it's exactly this.

I don't know where I said we give up the fewest chances, we don't, but we also aren't giving up a bunch of tap ins. I mean the Chelsea game where I thought he was decent they still scored two low percentage chances on Mount and Willian's goals. That's kind of where the standard has slipped to.

What I did say is we have a better defense than Palace do yet their goalkeeper can make saves. Other examples are out there too. Go look through our highlights. It isn't that he's making a ton of mistakes but rather that he isn't making a save here or there to bail us out. Watford for example is two shots two goals. Big chances but he's played then poorly. City away if he makes one save on Jesus, not that either was easy, but get one and we draw. United Fernandes has beaten him from 30 yards. Yes he's made up for it later but do what he's supposed to and we win that one. The run from Newcastle to Arsenal we gave up 8 goals on 11 shots on target. That's disastrous.

Honestly it gets worse the longer you look.
