Other than new centre midfielders, the second most pressing concern is the goalkeeper position

To be honest I thought we would have just triaged the RB situation with Sidibe for another year. If we go in with Kenny and Coleman we are in a lot of bother.

As someone pointed out yesterday, the only spot in the team we don't need a player for is LB, and if Digne leaves we might as well all pack up.

Some of my fellow oldies will remember Jim Arnold. Many years ago I met him & chatted about Nev and keeping in general. His thoughts are very relevant here IMO. In summary:

1. A keeper must earn the confidence of his defenders & build a rapport, which in turn gives the keeper confidence
2. This rests on consistency (training well, staying fit, being calm & professional around training & game day), predictability (no rash decisions & rushes of blood, clear communication, taking accountability) & reliability (making the saves, catches you should & not making glaring errors)
3. Making amazing saves on top of this is what separates the great ones like Nev but to become great Nev first had to become consistent, predictable & reliable.

Right now Pickford is not a fundamentally sound keeper. Does he have sufficient humility and self-awareness to recognise this, knuckle down and focus on the basics? I personally doubt it but I cannot see who will spend good £ on him so we likely have little immediate alternative than to hope the light goes on for him.

Southall’s warm ups were incredible.
I’d bet he was like that in training as well.

Like you say, it’s all about respect from your teammates.

...that 6 year contract extension he was given after the World Cup might have fended off his suitors but it can also make a player smug. Expensive millstone.

Lesson Learned - avoid 6 year contracts.

What a dramatic loss of form between then and now. Again I don't blame the board giving him that, keepers tend to stay at a club longer and you would have expected Pickford at his age to keep getting better. In hindsight everything is easier, had he stayed at the same level and we gave him a 4 year deal, 2 of those would have been used and one more season and he could have been off for buttons or for a free at the end of his contract. Just imagine the stick we would have given them for not tying him down longer. All it shows is that the is a very fine line to walk when running a club.

We can still swing that smugness around though, we just have to have the balls to drop him to the bench and make him work harder to win back the shirt.

We need a new left back, possibly a centre half, possibly a right back, certainly two midfielders and maybe a right sided winger.....a new first choice keeper will not be added to that list.
Is Gordon now expected to cover our left side all season?

I noticed there was no real mention again of him on MOTD last night. Maybe these mistakes are just expected now. No way is he the goalie for England at the Euros next year.
