Sergio Romero is interested in joining Everton from Manchester United in a move that would put pressure on under-fire goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
There have been no discussions between the clubs but it is understood that Everton have made contact with intermediaries to discuss a potential deal for the 33-year-old, who wants to leave Old Trafford and who would provide competition for Pickford.
The England goalkeeper, who joined from Sunderland for £30 million in 2017, has made a number of errors over the past year, the latest of which came in last night’s 5-2 win over Fleetwood Town in the Carabao Cup.
Pickford, 26, conceded the first after his clearance was charged down and then failed to stop Callum Camps’s bicycle kick even though it was straight at him.
Pickford does not have any serious competition for his place at Everton. At 20 years old Joao Virginia lacks experience and the only other goalkeeper in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad is Jonas Lossl, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Huddersfield Town.
Romero, who has played 96 times for Argentina, has fallen down the pecking order at United after the return of Dean Henderson from a two-year spell on loan with Sheffield United.
Henderson, 23, is now back-up to the first-choice goalkeeper, David de Gea. Romero has been a regular for United in the cup competitions but he was not even on the bench for United’s win over Luton Town on Tuesday night.
It is understood that Romero was annoyed at being left out of the team for last season’s FA Cup and Europa League semi-finals after playing regularly in the previous rounds of both competitions.
Marcel Brands, Everton’s director of football, signed Romero in 2007 when he held the same role at AZ Alkmaar.

There are a number of hurdles to overcome before any deal is struck, however. United are thought to want about £10 million for Romero, which is likely to be too expensive for Everton unless they raise money from player sales. Ancelotti already feels his squad is too bloated. “I have 31 players in the squad. It’s too much,” the Italian said last night.
Another potential problem is that Romero does not want to take a pay cut. He earns £100,000 a week under his present contract, which has one year left to run, although United can extend it by a further 12 months.
It is also possible that United could want to keep hold of Romero and use him as De Gea’s back-up if Henderson fails to displace De Gea as first choice and goes out on loan in January.
Romero has barely put a foot wrong for United since he joined on a free transfer from Sampdoria in 2015. The Argentinian has kept 39 clean sheets in 61 appearances, which gives him the best shutout percentage (64 per cent) of any goalkeeper who has made more than five appearances for the club.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the United manager, said last week that Romero was yet to report for training because he had given the goalkeeper extra time off.
The Norwegian admitted last month that there was not enough room for De Gea, Henderson and Romero in his squad. “It will be difficult to keep three of them at the club,” Solskjaer said.
