I'm way more inclined to take this direction.
If he resorted to hoofing every single pass to him we will definitely benefit from playing a academy midfielder in his position.

Ball playing is now secondary to goalkeeping for goalkeepers, as the modern game develops. You can make mistakes as a goalkeeper, but you can't be uncomfortable on the ball.
