2023/24 Jordan Pickford

Like most I suppose, we know his faults, not commanding in the air and seemingly unable to hold onto a ball. BUT, and it’s a bloody big but, he is an outstanding stopper, Englands best keeper by far, and we are incredibly fortunate to have him. We’d have been in the championship without him…….

Reflex saves wise, one of the best. Commanding of his box absolutely plop.

Pickford giveth, then taketh but it is what it is. If he was perfect at both he wouldn't be playing for us that's for sure.

Very much so. If we're being perfectly honest, he could do much better than Everton.

He's never going to win anything staying with us.

Didn't see the highlights until this morning due to work commitments but had already been laughingly asked whether I'd seen the latest "Pickford howler".

Some people just haven't got a clue. Narrative, narrative, narrative....
Pathetic narrative that, he had a cracking shot covered and then it came back off the post, terrible luck

Media was the same with seaman and very much the same with Hart - why do they want our best to fail? England have been to one final since 66 and Pickford was top class and saved two penalties in the shootout… but no he’s a clown because sometimes he concedes goals

State if Ashley Young there. Doesn't jump, gets bullied and is just waiting for the net to bulge

What a double save that is.
Treble. He uses his foot to claw the ball away from the oncoming striker after the face stop on to the post. Sensational.

That clown Rob Smyth in the Guardian suggested Pickford should have had the first one over the bar (saying it was a header from 10 yards out - look at the video - 7 at most, effectively point-blank). Pickford faces an agenda in the media for whatever reason. Thank God he does. It helps us keep a player way beyond our current standard.

Evertonians picking round the edges at Pickford clearly haven’t learned from Lukaku. We will spread the saves around, lads.

That Pickford continues to choose to stay at Everton, and play a bigger part than pretty much anyone else in avoiding catastrophic relegations should elevate him to one of our finest.

Know thy enemy, Evertonians.
Only Neville Southall stands above him as a number one in my 43 years as a supporter. And he's closer to Nev than he is to Nigel Martyn or Tim Howard.

I've seen him catch balls and command his box. He's never going to do it as much as a 6ft5 keeper though and instead plays to his strengths. I don't think it's the glaring weakness it's made out to be.

I think if we all sat and paid as much attention to every other keeper in the league we'd draw up a similarly long list of strengths/weaknesses. I reckon even Big Nev would be picked apart if he played in the modern game by people who are desperate to find a singular scapegoat for everything that goes wrong.

EDIT - not aimed at you Pete. Just along the lines of your post.

I’d go along with that but rolling it round my head as Martyn was ace!
Martyn was excellent - but he didn't make as many history-altering saves as Pickford. That save against Chelsea two seasons ago and that penalty save against Leicester last season arguably prevented two relegations. Who knows what yesterday's divine intervention could mean come May. On top of that, Nigel came to us in his decline. He was magnificent, but post-peak. Jordan has come and given us his best years. England's number one. And in a parallel world, he is Sir Jordan Pickford because that unbelievable penalty save to stop Jorginho winning Euro 2020 for Italy should quite plausibly have given his team-mates the chance to win the title. But it was England, so lolz.

Hard agree on all points, especially the last one.

It was peak Nev, that's what it was. Effectively, a triple save: the unbelievable reflex point-blank stop on to the bar, the fantastic head on to the post, and the sleight of foot (with huge presence of mind) to deny the oncoming forward a tap in. World class, Southall-level stuff from the lovable buffoon.
It was a great save no doubt, but the best save he has ever made for me imo, was the one at home against Chelsea, season before last, pushing it on to the post and scrambling across his goal line to clear it. Reflexes and speed. Amazing!
