Very few goalkeepers in football history are.
In England, in the 1980s, I would say only Shilton, Clemence, and Jennings could compare. Schmeichel in the 1990s. Has there been anybody this century to approach these levels consistently? The players I have mentioned here lasted for well over a decade in each case, sometimes two.
Seaman was a good keeper, but not in this class. Cech was never the same after that bad head injury. I don't really rate anybody else - and I love goalies, being an amateur one at Mickey Mouse level in my younger days.
Internationally, in the 1980s, the best keepers in my book were Rinat Dasaev - probably the only keeper of the 1980s who truly rivalled Southall for me - Harald Schumacher and Jean-Marie Pfaff. All were great in different ways. Dino Zoff was past his best by then, and Sepp Maier had retired.
From the 1990s, the highly eccentric Thomas Ravelli was memorable - and far better than his eccentricity suggested, Andreas Köpke was excellent for a few brief years, and Andoni Zubizarreta was always formidable, but none were in Big Nev's league. I liked Peruzzi and Pagliuca, too. Very good. Oliver Kahn was incredible for a while in the 2000s, but his private life got in the way of his career, so his time at the top at international level was brief enough. Gianluigi Buffon was the best since. Iker Casillas had a very good decade, too. Manuel Neuer was fantastic up to winning the World Cup. I think he dropped off a cliff then. I like Jan Oblak of the current crop, but I think he lacks the huge personality to win the shootouts that his teams consistently lose. Too quiet for my liking, not enough ego.
Anyway, this rambling treatise was brought to you in association with nostalgia. Bottom line? I don't think many in history compare to our Nev.
