Just how far behind the top four are we?

I know.

'We just need that rapid striker, in his prime, who can guarantee us 25 goals, who will come to Everton without European footy. FFS, Brands OUT'

But yeh, in all seriousness I'm struggling to think of too many who fit the bill.

- Aubameyang (not exactly set the PL alight yet)
- Lukaku (got the T shirt)
- Firmino (but only as part of Liverpool's specific system)
- Suarez
- Diego Costa
- Griezmann
- Ronaldo

I mean, that's about it...
Exactly, we’d be better concentrating on getting the team playing well and having five players contributing goals in double figures with a striker who can get 15 + goals. If we think back to the 84/85 team that’s what we had & won a couple of trophies. Let’s not get obsessed about having a goal scoring machine, they’re really hard to find.

Burnley and Leicester will drop off this year too. Man Yoo and Arsenal are all over the place. Wolves have the potential to be thereabouts in the top 10 but I can't see why we shouldn't be in the top 6 at a minimum and push for top 4.

baby steps, first aim should be to take back 7th and a European spot then see how we can improve our team year by year, no chance of anywhere near the top 4 atm

It’s early days yet, but apart from City the rest is open to anyone. If the players believe they can do it they probably will....

We are 10 away wins away plus 12 points off City, United, Spurs, Chelsea, Spurs and THEM.

We will get 67 points but will need 75-80 for a top 4 spot

Depends how you look at it really. We are miles behind in terms of ability and depth. Can we compete for a top 4 spot though? Of course we can, we just have to batter the rest of the teams and hope the top 6 take points off each other.

Think a few people are being a bit harsh on the OP here. As far as I can see, he's not saying 'we've gone 2 games unbeaten can we get into the top 4 this season', he's just asking what we need to do become a threat to the top 4. It's a valid question I think.

I honestly don't think it's the impossible task some people paint it as. A good DoF identifying the right players and a coach who gets the best of the squad can take you a long way. Spurs and Liverpool have shown the blueprint for us to follow, it is genuinely not that difficult to copy if you've got the money to do it. Close the gap/sneak into the top 6 this season, consolidate that next season by securing more good players, and then look to make a big push from there.

Hopefully we have already found the DoF, coach and benefactor to propel us up the league, but only time will tell.

Is that a little bitter?

For me the league is probably a big like

Two Contenders - City, RS
Third Solidly - Spurs
Strong with weaknesses - United, Arsenal, Chelsea

Long way to go - Us

Even further - The Rest

Lucky to stay up - Cardiff, Huddersfield

We've got our own weaknesses, and after two games, we'd be foolish to get TOO carried away, but as seen with Roberto's first season, Leicester winning the league, confidence is a massive thing, and with a favourable next set of 5 games (West Ham, Huddersfield and Fulham at home has to be 9 points), you can't dismiss anything, but we have to integrate 5 new players yet, and that'll be a lot harder than people think, especially with the language barrier.

Definitely a valid question.

I just think we're miles off currently competing. Got to just take it game by game really.

Anyone expecting a top four push, or a top six finish, is off the mark I'd say.

Not that we shouldn't be aiming for that, but we're currently not at that level.

Hopefully over the course of the season, that changes.

A change in mentality and some favourable refereeing.

It's not just a change in mentality, though.

Yes, that will help, of course it will, but the top six currently have better squads and, as it stands, more proven, experienced managers.

That is not to say we should not be aiming for it, but we have to be realistic as well.

First and foremost, the playing style and morale of the club had to change. It looks like both of those things are happening.

I can buy the quality gap in head to heads v the top 6 and also in terms of overall consistency (ie us not being good enough to put some teams away so some wins turn to draws that would have been wins for a top side). What I can’t accept though is Everton going away to poor sides and from the first ball being kicked playing as if a draw is a fantastic outcome. There’s been games there for the taking over the years and we’ve not gone for them because we’ve been content with plying out a draw. Our away record has been absolutely shocking and that is not a quality issue it’s a mentality one. If Silva can fix this then our scope for improvement is massive this season as our home record under most managers is usually good. I’m not saying we’re going to start turning teams over every away game but we should be going to the grounds of the bottom ten away from home at least with the aim of winning and not just looking for a plucky point.
