I don't get why the club would even want to spend so much out on one position. If he couldn't adapt then it would be a massive burden on the board for investing so much in a failure.

to be honest i would rather us pay the 20 million for the Gibsons and Keanes of the game and at least if they aren't world class in their prime they will at least be solid for the team which is all we can really expect.

Yeah lets not by world class players...

Why not? If he is that good and better than those guys, it's not like you are out 50M. He is likely going to only get better. And Keane isnt going to be cheap.

Because we have not got an unlimited pot of money to spend and certainly within FFP, spending 50 million plus on one player is going to have a bigger impact in recruitment in other positions.

but as my original point stands, what if he doesn't adapt? We spend more on him for example and he fails, like Mangala and Otemendi has at City, they can sell for a loss and move on, it would have a much bigger impact to us financially to have that price of failure at the club.

but as i said to Zatara above, is he that good? no big clubs moved for him last summer and if they do not this season either then why aren't teams interested in this world class defender as zatara put it like, who is available for transfer? Real Madrid bought Bale simply because he was available, no ambition with him other than a potentially top class player available for signing so they put the money up.

I personally question why Chelsea didn't then sign him at any point, especially when their back up ended up being David Luiz.

Mainly because Napoli didn't want to sell him so late on.

Though that's according to a statement from the Napoli chairman, so who knows....

We were meant to be bidding for him only 2 weeks into the window so i don't think selling him 'so late' is much of a reason. If it was a case of them only wanting to sell one, and Higuain was the bigger cash cow last summer then fair enough, take the most in one sale only. I just don't see much mention or interest of him away from seemingly on here. Obviously i haven't read through all 116 pages on here so i don't know what the talk in the summer between blues was, but i would have said the same last summer, i'd rather we buy cheaper than invest in only a couple.

This season David Luiz has been fantastic.

I haven't seen much chelsea in all honesty. The same argument could be applied to Gomez though at watford, always had a mistake in him at spurs but generally has been a great goalkeeper elsewhere.

As others have said, Napoli probably felt that they didn't need to sell and so weren't going to unless they wanted to, similar to we refused to sell Stones to Chelsea that one summer

I think us not selling stones was meant to be us making a 'statement of intent' of sorts to say we aren't selling our players, which then backfired under martinez spectacularly

considering we promised to sell him 12 months later, i think it was less not wanting to sell and more, especially in relation to Kenwright, to put on a show that we weren't a selling club. If martinez didn't have his first season then Stones probably would be a chelsea player now.
