Birds of a feather flock together
Not a good strategy, we throw away 5 matches. At this point with no further sales waiting for transfer deadline, they all are, who blinks first gets the best deal for their club, most likely a loan.

Very few clubs operate without a DoF nowadays.
Football has evolved away from the sole manager model in the same way it moved from having a committee to select teams and decide purchases and promoted the trainer into a manager to assume most of those responsibilities.
Football has become more complex , the scouting system has become global , the academies are expected to be capable of producing players to segue seamlessly into the preferred playing style of the first team , or recoup some of the outlay.
Players have become more powerful than they once were and their welfare must be attended to.
Managers themselves move around more than they used to and a competent and successful DoF provides stability and continuity from one manager to the next.
Consider ManU’s decline since the departure of Ferguson in the absence of a DoF.
Ultimately a DoF allows a manager to concentrate on the role he was primarily hired for, to coach, select and guide the team to success without getting bogged down in the minutiae of administering a multi million pound business.
The alternative was to throw money at transfers to get them done early. oh wait, we dont have much cash, wand that’s what got us here in th3 first place. Not a good strategy, we throw away 5 matches.
Football ‘clubs’ are far more complex organisations now though and the days of Managers staying for 4 years plus are rare. It takes time to build the infrastructure in a way that is aligned throughout the club that is the role of DOF hence all the back room changes. Thelwells job is to build a well run footballing operation regardless of who the coach is. He seems to be going at it in a far more rigorous and considered way than Brands (to what extent his hands were tied we may never know). Time will tell how effective it has been, and by that I mean 3+ years (at that point it was clear Brands had not been). Are they a lesser side because of a lack of a proper manager like Ferguson or cos they don't have DoF. You can make an argument for both. Football is the same game it always was, its just people want to make it sound more complex to justify their existence
Totally agree. This season is about consolidation, and starting a new strategy. You can see the squad developing. I don’t think they dropped points at the start of the season are a huge issue. If anything is cemented in our minds what we needed. The alternative was to throw money at transfers to get them done early. oh wait, we dont have much cash, wand that’s what got us here in th3 first place.
We don’t see another striker Kev
Never think like that mate: Eusebio 1 Champions league winners medal.Baines was a good player and a great servant to the club but -
Kevin Sheedy - 2 league titles, 1 cup winners cup
Leighton Baines -
In my opinion it is better to ‘throw away’ 5 matches and get the players the club both wants and needs. The alternative is we panic and buy whoever is available / being aggressively touted by agents. That is the behaviour that git us into our current predicament. Not a good strategy, we throw away 5 matches.
