Kevin Thelwell analysed our squad over the summer, he had this at his disposal

PlayerGamesGoalsAssists
Iwobi2632340
Gray3153128
Gordon8678

Average between them, a goal every 10 and an assist every 8.5 games.

He then decided to add:

McNeil164917

And we wonder why we can’t create any chances in a game.

Incompetence at the highest level

I don't dislike McNeil, he seems like an honest player who works hard, but he seems the biggest question mark of all of our signings.

Even Maupay, who while not the backup striker we needed, there was logic in terms of him half-decent goal return in the prem.

McNeil's numbers before we signed him weren't impressive (he's young tbf), the manager seems to want to play a front 3, and McNeil isn't wide-forward.

I just wonder you know, apparently we wanted him under Portly Iberian Hospitality worker, so is it a Kenwright and his people signing? Really, really odd.

Amazing the flip floppy nature of this fanbase, few weeks back yeah he's doing alright, now he is the devil. The 3 games we lost on the trot were all very tough fixtures, our only issue against Leicester was that we didn't play them in August - they have miles better players so pretty easy to see why they beat us, especially when we lost our 2 best midfielders and forward during the game. The stinker was the Bournemouth games but 2 results should not initiate fan meltdown.

I do, he was utterly gash in a god awful Burnley side, and ran at the pace of heroin infused snail.

We got told it was because of his pressing numbers; he may press, but just gets absolutely turned and left for dead.

I’m convinced he was a “shut up and take the money” deal to keep them quiet.

No mate, he failed when never addressed our crying need for a forward, or attacking options.

The majority of us said that without reinforcements we would struggle; you need goals to win games and we had none and currently have none.

If it’s not addressed soon then we are in BIG trouble

Lots of us were saying he had failed back in August and were shouted down

As long as we sign someone new, too many of our fans are happy. They don't care if they are any good.

We of course now know that but if Dom just returned and stayed fit whoever we would have bought would have stayed on the bench. He has made mistakes of course, McNeil was always a strange one to put it politely and probably took away any chance of having a half decent budget for a striker. Likewise we should have bitten off Chelsea's hand for Gordon to do something when they came sniffing.

Bottom line is between them they wanted to make us harder to beat and we prioritised 2 first choice centre backs and 2 central midfielders. I can't blame them as if we took all that money from Richarlison and bought a like for like replacement it wouldn't matter if we scored 2 a game as Keane and Holgate would match that in OGs.

If he doesn't get in a decent forward in Jan then I will join the calls for his head but we have to be a bit more patient and try to understand everything can't be sorted in one go when the problems are so deep and widespread.

We haven’t scored in 5 of the last 6 and most people could see this coming a mile off with the attackers he went into the season with.

We have no creativity from midfield, no real wingers with threat and no one to score goals up front if DCL is out, not that he scores many as it is. Massive work ahead to stay in this league.

It's weird because Mcneil and Maupay feel like squad players but when you bring nobody else in it leaves you badly exposed. I presumed Mcneil was brought in because we couldn't afford Cornet bad reason to buy a player it's weird he has regressed a few years ago he looked a pretty good player at least he's 22 we can sell him on if it doesn't work. What I do question is why we don't ever look at other leagues for players? Yes it's a risk but the reward is greater. Moffi and a winger from the French league would have been preferable to premier league averageness. I knew we were short when the window shut but the inability of FL to set up the team and the predictable DCL injuries mean we are bereft going forward. For me we need three players in this next window and try and boot out some of the dross like Keane, Davies, Rondon et Al. We need a creative midfielder a wide forward and a striker who can play as a number nine. Two loans and a buy.
