2024/25 Kevin Thelwell

Not sure how Thelwell role works, lot less than previous due to be not being on the board.
So I assume the DOF finds first team players the team management says needs to fill weakness in the squad. Indeed Thelwell probably has more freedom in youngsters. With not knowing his exact job role and responsibility not sure I can blame Kev too much for our right and left back issues.
It's Dan Purdy (Head of Recruitment) and the rest of the recruitment team (The scouts, analysts) who will identify the actual players not Thelwell. Kev will tell them what he wants and they go out and find it. The DoF role is really just a project manager role that covers the various departments within the club.

This summer showed why the DOF model doesn't work.

We spent the remainder of our budget on another defender. Even though we were desperate in other positions. And the manager prefers Keane at centre half anyway.

This is a ridiculous situation. Our recruitment just cannot be defended under Thelwell.
The problem with the role is that some bright spark (Kenwright) keeps giving managers a veto over the DoF on signings. Tbh if we are going to employ the DoF role (We always have under Moshiri) we shouldn't even be looking at old school manager types, we should have gone down the head coach route. It's typical of us really, can't do anything right.

I need to go back into the vaults from end of July. I was very vocal about spending the last of our money on O'Brien, given pelters because "we needed a centre half", and now look, it's come back round to that I was correct with my whinging.
We did need an extra centre half in all fairness. Dyche should be playing O'Brien ahead of Keane at the moment

The opening games have shown us exactly why we needed a centre half to be honest. Unsure how you’ve drawn that conclusion from it.

I said exactly the same and had some fella tell me it was a sensible "succession planning" move for when Branthwaite is sold.

I retorted with Branthwaite is still here and we've left gaping holes all over the squad that will probably see us get relegated.

I’m sorry, are you trying to argue we didn’t need a centre back? As we come off the back of 13 goals conceded in 4 games? Your argument really doesn’t work the way you’re thinking it does. In fact with Tarkowski’s form I’d say we probably could’ve done with bringing in 2 centre backs.

If we’re going to get relegated it will be as a direct result of having Michael Keane playing too much football. We needed a centre back.

What I can't square off with the 'it's not Thelwells fault, Dyche kept nixing all his suggestions' argument is how Dyche never stopped the O'brien transfer. Dyche must've known he would've rolled with Keane either way. His preseason showed as much.

Or is it a 'gift' from Textor? Or was the plan to be Obrien and he's come in and is utter tosh

I don’t understand how you’ve drawn that conclusion either. How many goals has he been on the pitch for? He should be playing ahead of Michael Keane, I don’t need to see him play any football to say that. I don’t trust the manager’s judgement either, he is wrong.

I haven't drawn that conclusion. The manager has seemingly drew that conclusion- one i dont agree with.

The question I'm raising is that if Dyche was blocking transfers left, right and centre all summer, why did he not block us spending half our budget on a 4th choice centre half? Unless something drastic has changed between him being scouted and him coming through the door.

The leaks don't add up. Either Dyche was blocking all sorts of deals from happening all summer (to absolve Thelwell of blame) and somehow let this mistake through or he wasn't blocking any at all.

I think a cheap loanee centre back coming in as third choice (who would then have started the season) with the £15m spent on full backs would have been 10x better than £15m on O'Brien to sit on the bench and be left with no full backs.

Absolute lunacy to spend that money while neglecting other areas.

The blocking transfers stuff came from bobble and his mate on their podcast and tbh mate they love Dyche normally. Bobbles mate won't have a bad word said against Sean normally regardless of what he does.

Well the £15m was meant to be on O’Brien to come in and actually play, which he should be doing, we didn’t buy him with the intention of him sitting on the bench behind Michael Keane.
