2024/25 Kevin Thelwell

Judging by the managers and players that have come in on his watch, I don't think he has the sort of contacts that can give an edge to a club that has years of catching up to do.

Seems more like an over-promoted scout than a director of football, similar to Walsh.
Tbf you can have all the contacts in the world but if you haven’t got two brass farthings to rub together you aren’t going to get very far.

Then you set your net further afield into markets more suited towards the budget you have so you can get better value for money. He is getting paid big money to find solutions towards problems like this, that is a big part of his role as DoF.

….always been a smooth talker and he’s at it again. Regardless of budget, there’s no excuse for acquiring poor quality footballers. He’s cosying up to FSG like he cosied up to BK and 777.

Folk on here complain about individual players, complain about Dyche, complain about our lack of quality but Thelwell gets a free ticket from most. Always surprises me, must be his words rather than his actions :coffee:

The plot thickens and becomes a little more sinister from you...

...FSG eh eggs :o

Could be that the club doesn't have the money to set the scouting network further afield. According to the article above they can't even afford to have academy kids training full time.

….i meant TFG, sincerest apologies.

Everyone knew what you meant no need to apologise ;)

I would say a couple of things...

If we take the examples of current players in the squad hes signed, and I may be cherry picking a little but its late;

Tarkowski Free
O'Brien £12mil (as per Lyons official financials)
McNeil
Garner
Iroegbunam
Ndiaye
Chermiti

I think we'd get our money back and turn a profit on all of them.

Beto clearly is the one where fingers may be pointed. However, I am yet to see anyone provide an example where they can argue against it, bearing in mind:

We were concerned DCL may be injured for eternity and needed a starting CF signed.

He had a decent record in Italy for a struggling team

There was zero money to spend.

If there is a starting centre forward with a good record for his team available for nothing down..with the physicality and ability to play in a team on the counter...

...ive yet to see who that would have been when we signed him.

Your point about signing a bad player is a valid one but if DCL had been injured yet again I imagine you'd have slated Thelwell for not predicting it. You'd have then been correct.

As this discussion goes full circle and starts again and again...he's sold off players galore and weve been the lowest spenders in the market since he arrived.

One player in our team (Beto) may be able to be shifted for a small book loss at the worst case while others can cover that error with profit.

If he was picking and investing in stocks for your portfolio would you be happy or crying about one poor stock pick while the others are almost all winners?

Also i believe by recruitment he was referring to using actual money to sign players...

The wave of talent signed for the youth teams is the first time hes been able to do anything there.

I think he's done very well on limited budgets. He's had to buy on the knock and take loans where we could.
They haven't all worked out of course. I really like the approach to the academies and youth set up though. Seems like a proper model is in place that will serve us well into the future.
He's definitely winning me over. More N'daiye and less Lindstrom please.

Most of it is done via things like Wyscout and other analytical software long before they send anyone too watch a player, yes the software costs but every club has it. The stuff about the academy is just laughable, we really are a joke outfit at times, I always said we should never have put a spade into the ground until the first team had had a few seasons of stability.
