2024/25 Kevin Thelwell

I think he's done very well on limited budgets. He's had to buy on the knock and take loans where we could.
They haven't all worked out of course. I really like the approach to the academies and youth set up though. Seems like a proper model is in place that will serve us well into the future.
He's definitely winning me over. More N'daiye and less Lindstrom please.
Agree id give him a chance on a short deal so we can see what he can do with another manager who would work with him better

Brought in a few duffers, but given all the underlying difficulties, he has done a decent job.

It will be interesting to see how he fares under a different owner.

I’d keep him on, done a good job in the circumstances. A few bad signings but I don’t think he would have signed Beto if there was someone better at £0 initial payment and you can add others to that list.

His role isn’t just about identifying and bringing players in anyway, it’s much more than that and with everything going on he has helped keep us going.

Everyone knew what you meant no need to apologise ;)

I would say a couple of things...

If we take the examples of current players in the squad hes signed, and I may be cherry picking a little but its late;

Tarkowski Free
O'Brien £12mil (as per Lyons official financials)
McNeil
Garner
Iroegbunam
Ndiaye
Chermiti

I think we'd get our money back and turn a profit on all of them.

Beto clearly is the one where fingers may be pointed. However, I am yet to see anyone provide an example where they can argue against it, bearing in mind:

We were concerned DCL may be injured for eternity and needed a starting CF signed.

He had a decent record in Italy for a struggling team

There was zero money to spend.

If there is a starting centre forward with a good record for his team available for nothing down..with the physicality and ability to play in a team on the counter...

...ive yet to see who that would have been when we signed him.

Your point about signing a bad player is a valid one but if DCL had been injured yet again I imagine you'd have slated Thelwell for not predicting it. You'd have then been correct.

As this discussion goes full circle and starts again and again...he's sold off players galore and weve been the lowest spenders in the market since he arrived.

One player in our team (Beto) may be able to be shifted for a small book loss at the worst case while others can cover that error with profit.

If he was picking and investing in stocks for your portfolio would you be happy or crying about one poor stock pick while the others are almost all winners?
He's deffo got a blind spot for strikers. Maupay and Beto are obviously poor signings and I guess we'll have to wait and see with Chermitti, he certainly seems to have more promise. In the other areas of the pitch I think he's done ok but it's hard to be totally sure given the financial circumstances.

Might be wrong but think he wanted Gyokeres and Duran before their moves but we couldn't pay the fees

That's all part of his job though, keep seeing all this guff about how he wanted this player and that player but couldn't strike a deal because we didn't have the money. He must have known his bloody budget so why was he looking at players he knew he couldn't afford? Its all fine and well saying we wanted the likes of Kudos, Diaz and co (makes him look better at the job than he is) but the reality has been very different, his job is to know the markets and make sure his budget fits it not play fantasy football trying too get "names" we can't/won't ever be able to afford.

I agree in part but for instance, do you think Onana signs for Everton with Sean Dyche in charge? It’s not just about having the money, the player also has to be persuaded to sign for the club and seeing as this club doesn’t even want to have the football in HOME games I can’t envisage many players with other offers on the table thinking it’s the place for them to thrive

Shouldn't have been signed in the first place tbh, I'm happy we made a bit of a profit but when he did sign we needed an attacking midfielder not a defensive one, we had been linked with Gibbs-White, very different players. We already know players have rejected us due too the manager, not much can be done about that tbh, we chose to make that bed so have to sleep in it.

It narrows the pool of players even further

Then don't employ a manager who you know players don't really want to play for. The issue for us was we are pathetic as a club and fully staffed by idiots from top to bottom, the first sign of trouble and its all about batten down the hatches, crisis management tactics, appointing the likes of Dyche or an Allardyce. My view is that the days of those firefighter manager types are over, sitting around the bottom flirting with trouble like Dyche does at times is not the done thing anymore imo. You simply MUST try and fight your way out of trouble as a club, the game is so fast moving these days you will just get left behind otherwise. People will shout the money thing (yes I get it) but when Villa and Newcastle were both in trouble down the bottom, they never went crawling for the safety net of a firefighter type did they. They grabbed the situation with both hands and battled against it. We pay Dyche £5m basic wage, that's the same as Postecoglu and then he gets a bonus on top of it for keeping us up, its top 5/6 money, if you think nobody else would have come here the last few years on those wages I just don't agree I'm afraid.

I’m not sure what this is mate. No doubt in my mind that Kenwright wanted Dyche. If Thelwell recruits players and that’s his role, although I’m not sure it is, he has so many obstacles to overcome that are not of his making to get players through the door and some people (not aimed at you btw) don’t acknowledge this.
For the record I think Dyche is as welcome as diarrhoea in a hot tub.

Tbf you can have all the contacts in the world but if you haven’t got two brass farthings to rub together you aren’t going to get very far.
I wouldn't be expecting miracles under these conditions, but there's no justifying the lack of balance to the squad, especially when he's put the club on the hook for big money with the likes of Beto and O'Brien.

The full-back situation and the lack of goals (despite having thrown plenty of money at forward positions) reflect very poorly on him.
