2024/25 Kevin Thelwell

I think the question of him continuing is complex. No doubt he has been given a tough hand in his tenure. I applaud him on striking a nice balance of pragmatism and development affordably. I for one did look at some windows wishing for some more youth and expansiveness but the squad in total now has a lot of appreciating assets on the plus side of the development curve. And the veterans have been crucial and more than rational placeholders.

He also leveraged the right assets for finances in Richy, Onana and Gordon. Defense is more crucial at the bottom of the table and rarely matches attackers price tag. I flirted with a Pickford sale, hindsight that would have been disastrous. Holding onto Branthwaite likely more impactful than Amadou last summer.

And one thing I give him massive props is even under the shoestring budget he has kept an eye on succession in deals. Its been a horrible oversight in many of our teams not planning for likely sell ons windows prior to exits. Chermiti factored likely Dom's departure years out, O'Brien likely Branthwaite's. Now Alcaraz with Doucoure. I think this summer is still going to be a rude awakening in just how many holes there are to fill but he's been able to keep at least a little attention on the importance of overlap in positions changing hands.

In terms of longterm I think the argument for him staying is that the squad stylistically isnt likely to change in the next two odd years at least. Moyes is empowered so I don't see the Friedkin's pushing progressive ball dominance football in the coming seasons if ever. With that in mind I think Thelwell has more of a case. He seems to understand deliberateness but also the importance of some mercurial magic in parts of a squad. That is very Moyes-esque. Its not pure grunt its blue collar but with splashes of style. I think if Moyes wasn't the hire I would have advocated to look elsewhere but with that settled I see no reason why Kevin shouldn't stay. If accidental they seem to be kindred valuing similar things.

Factor to note I did find interesting was in his media brief him stressing the difficulties still this summer. I would just say I think this coming window could be a real challenge still financially. Yes wages being cleared will help but some stalwarts or at least known commodities are walking on a free. Moyes improving our placement should help some recruitment but we are still going to be in a tight spot. I think thats also an argument for Kevin. I dont think we are out of the woods yet in regards to the restraints so moving on would make me wary

I good read mate, the one point t I do disagree on though is in terms of it being still tight financially, that only applies if TFG simply decide not to fund us for players - so opposite if how they acted at Roma when they substantially backed them in the first summer transfer window.

In terms of PSR we will have an absolutely massive amount of room this summer, the year for calculations that drops of the books for next is 67m, the two seasons we carry over are only combined a maximum of 37m.

Given loan restructuring, and pay down on some so no more interest, a slight lowering due to amortisation etc and the obvious increase due to match day income next season on top of all the new commercial deals likely including a large stadium sponsorship one too. Then the only limiting factor is how much the Friedkins want to spend really.

We could drop 200m net easily whilst staying very comfortably inside the PSR limit in fact and doing even that much would still see us next season being able to invest a good amount in the following summer as well - such would be the room available.

Get this summer right and we should be in the European places next season.
This is partly it for me. I do also really like Thelwell but - this summer is so, so, so crucial. Do we want to bring in someone new who has a month or so to fully understand from scratch the club, the players, the manager, the long term future plans, and the needs of all of those areas before that summer? Or someone who knows it all pretty inside out already?

I thought Thelwell did more than above average for having PSR, little in the way of finances, and the decision by the manager to not play the lads he brought in. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. He deserves the chance to see what can be done with plenty of funds available. If Alcaraz is who he seems to be, that’s another success story.

Pretty much our starting team

Pickford
O'Brien (16m) - Tarkowski (free) - Branthwaite - Mykolenko.

Lindstrom (20m) - Gueye (2m) - Garner (8m) - Ndiaye (16m) - Alcaraz (15m) -Beto (24m)

8/11 of the starting 11 bought by Thelwell if you say the loans are options we take. For just 101m including the entire midfield and starting striker. An average of just less than 13m a player.

Given we need 6-8 minimum in this summer and say we have 120-150m to spend then I think he's shown he can get great value for money. 5 pickups in that price range of 13m average (65m) and say 2-3 in the 25-40 range and we will have a very very solid squad for Moyes to work with.

The academy is within his remit, right? I think that's one area we've been badly lacking in for some time - not bringing through talent.

This summer was the first time we purchased some decent talent. Braiden Graham was well sought after and looks a talent. Justin Clarke looks a good signing as well and Loney has also settled in well.

But since Baines has moved up to the 1st team, I'd like us to take a look at the coaches of the u21s and u18s in the summer and ask are they the best we can do?

I posted yesterday, I think Moyes will have a big say whether he thinks Thelwell will be the right person to work with moving forward. There was such a huge disconnect between Thelwell and Dyche (similar to Walsh & Koeman or Brands & the waiter as examples) and we simply can't afford that to happen anymore.

So, if Moyes thinks Thelwell is on the right lines with the targets in the summer and they're both working from the same page, then I'd assume TFG would offer Thelwell a new deal.

TBF the disconnect between Thelwell and Dyche was unlike the others - even with Brands and the waiter you could plausibly argue that either side had sort of a point (with Walsh / Koeman probably neither of them did), but these last few weeks have pretty conclusively proved that Dyche was in the wrong.

My worry with Thelwell is that, if this is left hanging on much longer, someone is going to swoop in for him before we have the chance to decide whether or not to employ him again. If I was him then I'd be worried if being proved right didnt end up with my bosses deciding there and then that I deserved to keep my job.

Do you think someone better than Everton would swoop in for him mate?
