That's why net spend is different to gross spend. You have to account for Koeman gutting his own attack with Barkley and Lukaku out. You have to spend big to replace talent like Barkley in addition to spending to re-inforce the rest of the side.

But it's still choosing what you buy with the funds. You get an influx of funds it's how you spend it. Spurs with the Bale money, RS with the Suarez/Torres money.

And let's have it right, Lukaku is a massive loss for Koeman. Barkley on the other hand, Koeman could take or leave. So technically, he's 1 player down and brought in who he wants/can get.

Koeman's put it out there to cover his backside if it goes wrong. Next after that is the "Walsh bought them, not Koeman" if the players flop.

We've actually lost Lukaku, Deulofeu, McGeady, Kone and Cleverley. That's a lot of wage revenue.

I'm sure we're paying a bit more now but not by that much. Keane, Pickford and Rooney will be on big wages out of the newcomers.

I think Koeman's cooling off from putting trust in the lads coming through is going to be as damaging to him this season as bellyaching his way through it talking about how "poorly backed" he's been.
