Last Film You Watched

Was that the NASA lens?? I guess he had some lying around after filming the moon landing a few years earlier lol

But, I have to say that, IMHO, over the years Barry Lyndon has become Kubrick's best film. I do agree that it's slow and deliberate, but having seen all of his films multiple times, it's the one that stays with me the most. Very funny, too. I do understand that it's not the sort of film people might want to watch more than once, due to its length and pacing, but you might be surprised by the secrets it gives up after another viewing or two.

i read a Zeiss piece which said they made only ten of them: sold 6 to NASA and 3 to Kubrick and kept one for themselves.

I've used a Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 myself...lovely stuff!

Your point about Barry Lyndon is interesting, maybe in a few years i'll give it a second watch. 2001 is my number one favourite film ever, with Clockwork Orange & Eyes Wide Shut in my top 50. Spartacus, Shining & Full Metal Jacket are all strong 8/10's.

Still a few Kubricks left to watch: Strangelove, Lolita, Killing & Paths of Glory are in our dvd collection waiting. So far i'd say he's arguably the greatest film director of them all. He's like the Pink Floyd of film in that his films (like Floyd albums) are totally different to each other, with many experimentations, yet they still have his mark.

I thought it was a pretty fun film. Enjoyable action sequences and at least tries to explain the ridiculous plot device of the weak spot on the Death Star in the original Star Wars. But then I think the original trilogy is nothing more than fun but flawed goodies v baddies in space which is frustratingly slow in parts and struggles to keep it's head above water due to the weight of the central characters plot armour. :p

I guess we disagree here a little, Claus. As an antidote to the staid Rogue One we wacked on Fifth Element tonight which i haven't seen since the 90's yet if anything it's improved with age! Charming, fun, with lots of creativity, great FX, sets, costumes and characters who are very distinct from one another. I underrated Chris Tucker's performance back when i was a less cultured lad but now i really appreciate it. Mila Jojovich is still outstanding and Bruce Willis is Bruce Willis before he got earnest & boring. Gary Oldman is the cartoon baddie but in such a film it's perfectly fitting. Rogue One failed in its seriousness. Fifth Element reminds us space opera is meant to be fun. 8/10.

The grand tour was amazing.

Fifth Element is one of those that looks like I'd enjoy it but I've just never got round to watching. Now you've mentioned mid/late 90's era Willis I want to rewatch Twelve Monkeys.

we rewatched 12 Monkeys about two years ago...another belter! also the underrated Deep Impact from 1998 is great: good science, fantastic fx and believable drama.

Creepy
Just watched on nowtv.....subbed japanese movie, as all great japanese horror movies ringu, Ju-on and Tetsuo... it will be copied by Hollywood and made half as good. Check it out...before its rehashed and dumbed down.

Fifth Element is a good watch, lovely art...Milla is stunning, worth the watch alone...Chris Tucker (not a fan normally) but is MENTAL-ly ace in this. Not as fab as Blade Runner but still worth a view.

Kubricks shining was classed as a failure, can't see it myself, a wonderful film and a film maker not afraid to buck a trend. Legend !!! I will happily check out the others you have mentioned. Like Lynch they create works that take a generation or two to fully appreciate.

Lynch is a great shout as a Kubrick-equal. Twin Peaks season 3 is proper, episode 8 is genuinely astonishing.

Tbh I have struggled with series 3, I love the vision but i just want old coops back haha. I get that Lynch is taking Twin Peaks back from the farce of the middle to end of series two but imo he really is overpaying it. Mind you it took me a decade to really appreciate series one for all its majesty. I guess I'm just a slow learner :)
