Last Film You Watched

Last films watched, pretty good run:

original Jurassic Park on modest dvd...haven't seen it since mid-90's...fx still hold up! Great pacing, acting and setpieces. Not much depth but it's a blockbuster, innit. Laura Dern is damn fine. 8/10.

The China Syndrome: not seen before, also excellent acting, and quality dialogue and setup, very realistic. No OTT drama. Perhaps a little too dry but still worthy 8/10.

Contact. another one not seen since the 90's...very good, clever, trusts its audience rather than spoonfeeds it. leaves the ending open to interpretation. philosophy a little 'pop', and lacks the high-end art of 2001, but then so do most films. another 8/10.

Looper. was undecided if i liked it due to both main characters not being particularly compelling, but the ending really sold it (
especially the slow-mo scene with Emily Blunt calming her child in the field
). 7/10.

Whiplash...i do like my fusion-jazz, tho' this style wasn't represented i still felt a musical connection to the film...it's a real love-letter to jazz in general. was blown away to find out Miles Teller actually played those drums! even with edits/cuts it's still excellent playing. gorgeous camera-work, no melodrama, phenomenal performance from Simmons...only complaint was i felt his character was too OTT, and Miles's obsession to be the best wasn't exactly making me sympathetic to him. but the perfect ending saved it. another very enjoyable 8/10.

Hellraiser 1 & 2. first one was meh, great fx but not that interesting. 5/10. part 2 is where it's at: truly horrific yet fascinating scenes, memorable dialogue and imaginative otherworld. favourite line must be the: "and to think...i hesitated". i originally scored it a 7, due to some dialogue/scenes being a bit cringe, but i kept thinking about it, so deffo an 8 or even 9/10. watched it on grainy dvd, gonna hunt down the bluray and rewatch.

Altered States. One of the best films of all time, already seen it once but that were many yonks ago. even better second time round. bordering on a rare 10/10, requires a third watch to confirm. one for the psychedelic heads.

Watched Edge of Tomorrow Last night.

Is there a better original Sci Fi movie in the last 10-15 years??

Don't know if anyone else has had this (with any film) but while I was watching it - I don't know if I wasn't paying attention or just zombied out - but at no point was I ever thinking to myself this IS a great film. But when the credits started playing something hit as I said that was bloody amazing.

i was the opposite, while it was playing i was thinking this might be one of the best films i've ever seen...was totally exhilarating...but the ending, while decent, failed to land a knock-out. very strong 8/10 still. probably Tom Cruise's second-best film after Interview with the Vampire.

Those V for Vendetta and Collateral ratings are pure aids.

And the dawn of the dead rating is just pure nuclear disaster.

???

It's one of my favourite films that. Shocking score. :)
i was shocked myself as i was expecting to like it. big fan of dystopic fiction, and love the John Hurt 1984 film. but Vendetta just felt too on-the-nose, predictable. and i cringed everytime V spoke...plus Natalie Portman can't act. and John Hurt here was just chewing the scenery, no subtlety or ambiguity (and none in the script either).

really enjoyed Romero's first Dead film: was serious dark stuff. Dawn was just bad comedy, bordering on slap-stick.

Collateral was simply dull. a rare Tom Cruise stinker. felt like an extended flashy ad.

Totally get it.

It took me watching it at least 2 times to realize it.

Watched Without Remorse with Michael B Jordan...possibly the worst of the Tom Clancy screen adaptations.
