Last Film You Watched

My teenage son wanted to watch Army of the Dead as he loves Zack Snyder. Thought it was ok in parts, but absolute gash in other parts. Afterwards we watched Romero's Day of the Dead and I thought it stood up well. Much slower pace than modern zombie films but also much more chilling (especially the climax), and I found the characters much more sympathetic than the two dimensional mercenaries in Army of the Dead.

Watched that 22 July on Netflix last night. Harrowing. Scares me to death there's probably absolute nutters like Braivik out there still going about their days, plotting..

Watched quite an interesting one last night - Ghost Lab.

Two young Thai Doctors investigate and conduct increasingly extreme experiments into the existence of ghosts.

The first half an hour is forgettable, but after that it becomes a half decent litttle film.
Me and missus stuck that on a few nights ago and ended up falling asleep about 25 minutes in, although it was fairly late to be fair.

Last films watched, pretty good run:

original Jurassic Park on modest dvd...haven't seen it since mid-90's...fx still hold up! Great pacing, acting and setpieces. Not much depth but it's a blockbuster, innit. Laura Dern is damn fine. 8/10.

The China Syndrome: not seen before, also excellent acting, and quality dialogue and setup, very realistic. No OTT drama. Perhaps a little too dry but still worthy 8/10.

Contact. another one not seen since the 90's...very good, clever, trusts its audience rather than spoonfeeds it. leaves the ending open to interpretation. philosophy a little 'pop', and lacks the high-end art of 2001, but then so do most films. another 8/10.

Looper. was undecided if i liked it due to both main characters not being particularly compelling, but the ending really sold it (
especially the slow-mo scene with Emily Blunt calming her child in the field
). 7/10.

Whiplash...i do like my fusion-jazz, tho' this style wasn't represented i still felt a musical connection to the film...it's a real love-letter to jazz in general. was blown away to find out Miles Teller actually played those drums! even with edits/cuts it's still excellent playing. gorgeous camera-work, no melodrama, phenomenal performance from Simmons...only complaint was i felt his character was too OTT, and Miles's obsession to be the best wasn't exactly making me sympathetic to him. but the perfect ending saved it. another very enjoyable 8/10.

Hellraiser 1 & 2. first one was meh, great fx but not that interesting. 5/10. part 2 is where it's at: truly horrific yet fascinating scenes, memorable dialogue and imaginative otherworld. favourite line must be the: "and to think...i hesitated". i originally scored it a 7, due to some dialogue/scenes being a bit cringe, but i kept thinking about it, so deffo an 8 or even 9/10. watched it on grainy dvd, gonna hunt down the bluray and rewatch.

Altered States. One of the best films of all time, already seen it once but that were many yonks ago. even better second time round. bordering on a rare 10/10, requires a third watch to confirm. one for the psychedelic heads.

some more i watched 'n rated (imdb, lad) since my last post here 13 months prior:

Watcher in the Woods 5/10
Scanners 5/10
Dawn of the Dead (1978)...2/10

Trading Places 6/10
V for Vendetta 2/10
Collateral 2/10 (sorry @Prevenger17 )
The Goonies 7/10
The Island (2005)...5/10

Mission to Mars 4/10
The Others 6/10
Hereditary 6/10
Knowing 8/10
Invasion of the Triffids (1963)...7/10

Innerspace 7/10
The Witches 7/10
The English Patient 7/10
The Thing 8/10
Kairo (2001)...6/10

incidentally 26 films listed here, so me 'n the missus average about two films-per-month. are yous around that mark also?

Simply in disbelief at the v for vendetta and collateral scores.

What didn’t you like about collateral?

I love V for Vendetta but can see why Simone would hate it, but collateral? It’s superb.

posted earlier: simply dull. a rare Tom Cruise stinker. felt like an extended flashy ad.

me better-looking half was equally unimpressed. we ended up skipping through it, groaning at the faux-grittiness, cod-philosophy and clumsy setpieces. the two main actors were both entirely unengaging.

Spiral: Book of Saw - loved the first 2 Saw films, then they massively declined into “how violent can we go”. Had small hopes for this. Complete overacting, horrible screenplay and ridiculous script. Without the acting of Max Minghella (handmaids tale) this would have been a full ZERO because he’s the only one who doesn’t overact every scene or isn’t a cliche cop
