I think Villeneuve wanted to make sure he had the same amount of freedom with it too i think.

Nah, from what's online, when he first joined it was always 2 parts, the script was designed for 2 parts, the end of part 1 was a pretty decent stop in the book too. Would of course been poop to never do part 2 but I think everyone knew it was always happening. There should be 3rd too (different book).

Rewatched February aka The Blackcoats Daughter. Great atmospheric horror, slow burning, no jump scares.

Well it's a film that's failed a few times in one way or another, plus is an odd/difficult time for the film industry so I guess they can't take too many risks.
