Did they do a 3 part series of that or something? Surprised it hasn’t been tried again to be honest. The book is brutal.
I remember Eddie Redmayne played the lead. It focused too much on the love story and not enough on the war and tunnelling imo. It didn't come close to capturing the claustrophobic atmosphere of the book.

I recall the author was asked to write a James Bond novel, maybe 10 years ago, which I enjoyed too. Can't remember what it was called.

The author is Sebastien Faulks and his James Bond book was Devil May Care. I've read a few of his works and nothing really comes cloe to Birdsong.

Rock solid, very focused WWI drama about British civilian miners recruited to dig under the German lines and do some serious dynamiting. This is a first time director on a budget of less than 500k. With a strong cast, tight script, excellent period and trench settings and a nice anti-toff attitude this is actually very impressive and punches well above its weight.

Well recommended, Netflix.
Looks good. Thanks!

Watching Bronson at the moment … Tom Hardy is his usual self but I just don’t get the film… the story could have been told in a far better… less weird way … unless it’s just gone totally over my head in which case I’ll never understand it.
Yes it is a bit of a weird one Bronson.

I do not think it should be viewed totally as a biographical life story of the UK's most notorious or longest serving prisoner or whatever he is. Rather the film lends itself to a sort of bizarre psychological montage of a particular criminal mindset and it attempts to convey emotional constructs rather than historic realism- there is a nod to Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange in this method.

Kudos to the creators for trying it this way; too many times British crime films can fall onto a non-descript cockney gangsters by numbers pastiche. That being said, with all its attempts at being something creative and original, it does not really work for me.

In my humble opinion they’ve tried too
