In the past two days in work I’ve watched The Goonies, Forrest Gump, Dead poets society, The water boy, The Alpinist and finally The Dawn wall.
Been an enjoyable shift.

I really liked Benediction, about war poets Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen. While I wasn't a big fan of their stuff at school (where we studied their poems for what felt like years at a time, and in as uninspiring a way as is possible), as an adult I can recognise the greatness in their work, and it's a really enjoyable and entertaining film. It focuses mainly on the life of Sassoon, and it really had me hooked for its 2 and a quarter hours; Jack Lowden (from Dunkirk) is very good in the main role. It reminded me to hunt out Regeneration, a film I haven't seen in years but thought was great at the time, as that would make a good double bill with this.

Yes mate, my work takes me to various film festivals throughout the year, so I tend to see a fair amount of stuff at press/industry screenings. Benediction has actually screened at three of the festivals I've been to in the past six months or so, but it was only at the most recent of these that I finally got round to seeing it - I think it's out in the UK next month?

Saving Private Ryan.

I recall seeing it near the time of release but I was young so I had very little memory of it. It felt like I was watching it for the first time.

The opening scene in particular, as expected, was harrowing.

Slow burner, no action but a satisfying ending with a twist.

It should’ve committed either to comedy or seriousness, not both at the same time.
