Last Film You Watched

No surprisingly not, he's got some acting chops and holds his own alongside one of the most stellar casts I can imagine. Give us a review when you've watched it. It's always really interesting getting a first view reaction from someone else...

Erm it was okay lol certainly no classic and I wouldn’t watch again. Storyline is bonkers and Stallone’s character couldn’t be more useless. Reminds me of Doofy from Scary Movie.

hes deaf in one ear, which keeps him off the force, this is why hes so important because he wants to be part of the force but if he had been he would have been entwined further in the corruption and brutality that eventually played out how it does. did you spot Debby Harry? and go on, admit it, when Liotta turns up you were punching the air right?

Yeh I get why he’s not on the force but he’s just crap. He acts like he’s been held back about 5 years in school. He idly watched corruption because he fangirled over Keitel’s character. I mean Liotta accidentally killed his girlfriend and didn’t own up to it just for the insurance money so didn’t care for his “comeback”. Also, why would Superboy go back to NYC? He’s going to immediately go to prison for a double homicide. The whole drug running connection was very much skipped.

I understand a lot of these films can overlook dodgy stories with cool action sequences but this film had only one.

He's reached his glass ceiling, is a decent man that did a very decent thing and it cost him. That hes allowed it to continue costing him is the next part, surrounded by gentrified criminals, Liotta wants out and away from the shot callers, the toxicity of it is the study. it costs another decent copper his life. the previous sacrifices are alluded to. the question it reraises in a fairly new way is, what price law and order and who is watching and listening for any problems with how it is delivered. not least for its era it highlights coverups that cost lives in communities that have become more prevalent in attention for receiving brutality and worse. great cast and its testament to his goodwill he was able to assemble it, but then he is an oscar winner. I'd have fancied her he was keen on as well. phwoar!

Yeh not sure I could ever bother to read so deeply into a film as basic as that lol we can just agree to disagree on it being a bit crap.

its no oscar winner, I can think of much much worse. for stallone, its one of the few straight roles hes ever done. recommend me a film in return?

I just expected more considering the cast. Well I’m about to watch Fracture (Hopkins & Gosling) which I love if you’ve seen that?
Don't think I have but its Alien$ for me now (itv4) I'll snag fracture and give it a whirl. drama? romcom? kungfu action gorefest?

It’s a psychological drama I guess? The plot is straightforward but pits Gosling against Hopkins and they’re really strong in it. I’m a big fan of Gosling though.
Sound, fave Gosling films? Always interesting getting Lecteresque vibes on screen, it'd be ace if him and Brian Cox had a face off... (thing can only get better...)

The Nice Guys
Blade Runner
Fracture
Drive
The Place Beyond the Pines
The Gray Man

Because of Notebook people think he’s rubbish but he’s a belting actor.

2012...the end-of-the-world Emmerich flick from 2009.

Before watching: turned brain off, lowered expectations, and was prepared to accept ridiculous nonsense and computer graphics.

Good tactic as it turned out! Was super-entertaining, with strong cast and absurdly-spectacular FX. Screened on big 3x2m projector image, so pretty epic.

The absurdity got to silly levels, of course...the symbolism of certain scenes was so on-the-nose even art schools would've failed their students for them, and the sentimentalism of the archetypal moral-compass character was very hollywood rather than realistic, but he was played with convincing gravitas so gets a pass.

8/10. As good (in its own popcorny way) as more respectable Disaster fare like Dante's Peak or Towering Inferno.

Titbit: the 2012-prophecy of end-of-days is deemed to stem from the Mayan Calendar ending. But according to Mayan experts the calendar doesn't end in 2012 (or at all, really) and they have no apocalypse prophecies either. So not sure where that idea originally came from. Made for a fun movie, anyway.
