2012...the end-of-the-world Emmerich flick from 2009.
Before watching: turned brain off, lowered expectations, and was prepared to accept ridiculous nonsense and computer graphics.
Good tactic as it turned out! Was super-entertaining, with strong cast and absurdly-spectacular FX. Screened on big 3x2m projector image, so pretty epic.
The absurdity got to silly levels, of course...the symbolism of certain scenes was so on-the-nose even art schools would've failed their students for them, and the sentimentalism of the archetypal moral-compass character was very hollywood rather than realistic, but he was played with convincing gravitas so gets a pass.
8/10. As good (in its own popcorny way) as more respectable Disaster fare like Dante's Peak or Towering Inferno.
Titbit: the 2012-prophecy of end-of-days is deemed to stem from the Mayan Calendar ending. But according to Mayan experts the calendar doesn't end in 2012 (or at all, really) and they have no apocalypse prophecies either. So not sure where that idea originally came from. Made for a fun movie, anyway.
