Eyes Of Fire (1983).

Funny little egg this. Woodsy folk horror about a ragtag group of settlers who find their way to an eerie valley that's given a wide berth by local natives, and spookage ensues.

It's really weird, on the one hand, although pretty low budget, it looks pretty good, period detail including a decent stab at 18th century vernacular isn't bad at all, and although the effects are quite 80s there are some really striking and hallucinatory moments. Cool synth soundtrack from Brad Fiedel who'd go on to do Terminator a year later.

But, although the script is OK and the story is quite compelling the acting is absolutely 'kin terrible and it just craters the whole thing.

There's a good film in there somewhere but this ain't it. Good target for a remake.

Watched this last night on recommendation.

Monkey Man.

Dev Patel of Slum Dog Millionaire fame, directing debut and he plays the lead too.

It’s an outstanding film and comparisons to John Wick are way way off the mark.

Dev Patel plays a lowly bare knuckle fighter, seeking revenge on those who wiped out his family and village.

It’s the rarity with revenge films, in that it’s brilliantly written and acted.

The fight scenes form a small part of the film, rather than most of it and you really identify with Patel and his quest for revenge.

Patel must’ve trained himself to death for the part too, as he looks every bit the part of a street fighter.

The camera work and settings are spot on too. Portraying the vast gulf between the rich and the poor in India.

Don’t be put off that nearly all the cast are Indian, as not one single person is miscast in this and every single person in this film can act.

One of the best revenge films ever done and this should be the launch pad for Patel to become a proper A lister.

A must watch.

They've could have cut the flashback scenes a little bit shorter. That's my only note...

Lol, otherwise pretty much agree with you. Oh, and Sharlto Copley. Even though he had a small role, he's a sh.te actor.

Can only be a stereotypical saffa... That's the extent of his range: 'Howzit okes! Let's watch the bokke and have lekker jol this weekend!' 🤦‍♂️
 

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes - watched it at the imax. Was a decent film, but not a patch on the recent trilogy ones. Proximus seemed like a really good character but he's hardly in it. Given the wait since War, can't help but be disappointed with this one. Visually it was great, but the story not so much.

Thanks for the write up, I was toying with the idea of going to see this, but will swerve based on that.
