For me it is you are entitled to courtesy until you lose it. Respect is earned, no exceptions, no provisional status.I go for the “you have my respect until you lose it” model of respect. Mason, as one example, lost it ages ago

But it wasn't dressed up as being correct in some way or greeted with silence...well actually not sure if the referee has admitted a mistake or not, but at least noone has attempted to convince us it was a correct decision somehow. In fairness, the ref in the rugby on Saturday had a really bad game too. There's bad officiating in most sports.

I can to some extent appreciate why they may be reluctant to overtly admit errors on a regular basis, but a genuine and open explanation would definitely help. For me, it isn't rocket science to anticipate that a wall of silence from the company providing services will eventually result in furious customers. It is no different here. I dont think that the premier league quite understands who butters their bread ultimately.
Also, an admission of a mistake made or even just an explanation the fans don't agree with will somewhat appease most fans, the reasonable ones. The unreasonable ones are going to be unreasonable regardless, so why. Uild your strategy around them?
With the point of refereeing, I totally agree: communication, consistency and authority means people will adhere to the rules and if they don't, punish them.I've said this forever. I rugby style referee at the youth football level and it works. The referee even tells the players what to do and where to go (literal not figurative) in order to obey the laws of the game
Clive Thomas says hello. For a long time I've thought he was not only the worst referee currently, but all time in the top flight.
I remember that. It was Gonzalo Jara, an absolute shithouse of a player, made an awful and malicious challenge on Arteta that went unpunished, so Arteta stamped on him.First time I recall Mason shafting us was right in front of my view main stand at Goodison,my memory of it is a little vague its so long ago!!Arteta went up for a header think it was against West Brom, clearly takes an elbow to the face, goes down poleaxed,Mason was stood within ten yards and couldn't miss what happened, he waved play on, the crowd was a seething cauldron of anger,I'm pretty certain one of our boys a minute or so later wipes out the WBA offender going right through them which then results in Mason quickly producing a red card and sending an Everton player(I can't remember who!!)off, the crowd went mad, maybe someone else can recall it better than myself?!!
I just clearly remember seeing mason looking straight at the arteta assault and unbelievable that play continued after what he witnessed first hand!!would that have been around 2007ish? scary he's been reffing that long if so!!I remember that.
