Leighton Baines - representing Everton on the national stage

I thought Bainesy did well, he had nothing in front of him like he does for us, alot of his overlap work went unused but he did make the options. He defended on the front foot and also gave his team options. I think he has just played himself into the world cup squad! he is alot better than warnock in my eyes! but maybe they are looking throough blue tinted glasses. Thought when milner came on and played a little more infront of him and not raoming so central like Gerrard did. He looked reall Better, all in all he look at home and comfy at that level.(y)

i didn't watch the game but reading through the thread, it sounds like baines did pretty well. here's the only mention of baines in soccernet's report of the game:

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/report?id=285674&cc=5901&league=FIFA.FRIENDLY

Thereafter, it was a chasing exercise for England and a chastening experience for Capello, who watched new-boy Leighton Baines struggle to acclimatise to his new surroundings, his midfield fail to function and both Gerrard and Rooney find it impossible to work round Defoe in the manner they like to do with Emile Heskey

absolutely no mention of him delivering the cross that resulted in the game winning goal, all they say is he "struggled ot acclimatise." ******* bullshit i need to stop going on that site for my own sanity.

I just like to say that Baines tonight did well, and he was well proud of turning out for his country, and is not behaving like a complete ted over England and allowing dickheads to ruin it for him.

He's also not jumping on the bandwagon, and realises that it's a step up for his career, whether or not he stays with Everton or not.

Well done Baines lad. I won't be returning to this thread nor will I be hear whilst the world cup is on, as I can't be arsed to read the England who, from English people, and the usual don't give a [Poor language removed] threads.

Why quote with an 'Er' ?

Baines plays every game because we have no designated cover for him. Another player in that position and we can rotate a little, which would be very advantageous for both Baines and the team.

he means Baines is a left back

England v Egypt: Leighton Baines nails his national audition
When Fabio Capello reeled off the names of eight of his starting XI on the eve of this game it meant the final three were always going to be under that bit more scrutiny.

But this wasn’t just a debut for Baines. It was a clear, one-off audition for a place in Capello’s squad. As simple as that. Fluff your lines on your first appearance and, this close to the World Cup Finals, there would not be a second chance.

With Ashley Cole’s broken ankle — and off-field problems which also should not be discounted from his rehabilitation (there are those close to him who have been suggesting that the Chelsea defender may jack in international football) — and with Wayne Bridge’s self-imposed exile following the John Terry/ Vanessa Perroncel imbroglio then this was a unique situation. A test of character.

Capello had made clear there was a pecking order for the left-back spot, a position he regards as a specialism which means he has dismissed suggestions to play James Milner or Gareth Barry, who was excellent last night in the centre of midfield, there. First Cole, then Bridge - and then Baines and Stephen Warnock at level-pegging as back-up. Fight it out. Now both may go.

Baines is more in the mould of Cole but last night wasn’t about attacking — although he played a significant role in England’s second goal — and more about discipline. This was a tough assignment. He had Steven Gerrard in front of him but the captain — for the night — was roaming even more than usual, pushing that licence Capello has given him to switch across the pitch and link as much as possible with the indefatigable Wayne Rooney.

With England chasing the game, Gerrard was pushing more and more into the middle which meant Baines, often occupied by covering both midfielder and full-back, had to be aware. Neat in possession, his approach was simple.

But, as he found when playing in the Championship, and then the Premier League, he wasn’t out of played. It was an assured debut. One in which he resisted the temptation to attack too much, to catch the eye but exposing the defence. He played for the team. And Capello will appreciate that all the more

Baines did well last night. Its nice to see the national media acknowledging that Gerrard ignored his defensive duties at left back making it difficult for Baines.

After speaking to a RS mate last week it doesn't surprise me. TO my shock he said as a Liverpool fan he wouldn't mind if Gerrard left in the summer to which all the other RS fans in the pub agreed. It seems with Benitez's weakness has grown Gerrards position. He said he just marauds around the pitch for Liverpool demanding the ball and when he looses it or the ball go's 5 or 10 yards either side of him he makes no effort to get back in possession. As I haven't seen Liverpool play other than the derby I can't really comment.

Either way for England to have any chance of winning the world cup I would love Gerrard playing to his potential. But just as Spain have expressed concerns over Torres suffering burnout with the RS forcing him back early to salvage their miserable season. Gerrard looks Jaded But like Torres he will play every single match possible in order to save fat Rafael's career and Liverpool's finances.

When you look at the rest of the England side there are again too many vital players underperforming this season. People talk of experience helping ENgland in the world cup. People should be more concerned with current form.

Rio on his day i one of the best centre backs in the world. But this season he has looked so unfit its untrue.

Ashley Cole is one of the best left backs in the world. As much as I like Baines as an England fan you pray to god he is fit for the world cup. Because there aren't many English players who you can say are the best in the world for their position.

Glen Johnson- great going forward weak defensively and he still isn't back from injury which is a massive concern.

Joe Cole- For England to have any chance of winning the tournament this lad needs to be fit. He is one of the only continental esque players England have. A player who on his day can make something out of nothing. When you come up against the best defensive midfielders in the world you need players who are capable of that one moment of genius. For me - on his day he is all we have.

Gerrard- see above

Barry- not looked the same player since he has been at city.

Rooney- truly world class. But in world cups teams pick up injuries. Rooney 2004, Owen 2006. Other than Rooney we have nothing. You look at the strikers England had at Euro 96 Les Ferdinand Fowler, Sheringham, Shaearer.

In 98- Shearer, Sheringham, Owen and Les Ferdinand.

Other than Rooney this country is not producing the forwards it once did.

It sounds defeatist but after 2008 people should be happy we are there. It was crap not watching England in the 2008 euro finals.

Sounds like he did OK.
First half dodgy, but then the whole team were sh1te.
I doubt Warnock would have done better. Press reports seem favourable.

Rooney should be captain.
Crouch should be in the team, not just the squad. His goalscoring record speaks for itself.

Walcott should not be in the squad. He's barely played at all this season and it shows.

Interesting piece on Baines here. Particularly this bit:

Baines was first touched by the fear of failure when he was too embarrassed at the age of 10 to play for a Sunday League side. He was too shy to pick up a guitar he bought himself and even kept the fact he became a dad aged 18 a secret from his Wigan employers because he was worried what the reaction would be.

When his performances for Wigan led to an England Under-21 call-up, he felt “out of place”. And his move to Everton in 2007 brought a familiar feeling of anxiety.

But slowly, Baines has become more assured and was last night given the chance to prove he possesses the strength of mind to dig Capello out of a potential defensive hole.

Some might see a slight contrast with the man Baines has replaced at LB for England. I wouldn't be so crass as to mention it myself ;)

i read that earlier, i had no idea! after reading that i'm surprised he did a post match interview on cam!

I think once he'd played he must have realised (as most of those watching did) that he wasn't out of place at this level. Did you clock his face as the teams walked out the tunnel? I thought he looked nervous as hell. If Capello handles him right and praises his contribution, he'll be more confident next time and might raise his game again.

If Baines was surprised at getting a 90 minutes action, how surprised would he have been at getting the set piece responsibility? Top lad! Top performer! Get in there, Warnock who? (y)

I hate any of our players being called up - ball, jeffers, Rooney, lescott...

i definitely understand the fear but i don't think the same will happen with baines. first, based on that shyness he doesn't seem like the type to buy into any tapping up from others in the england setup. second, most of our regular starters are internationals now anyways, from france, the netherlands, russia (despite not making the world cup), nigeria, one of australia's best players, arguably the USA's 2 best players. Really our only regular starters that aren't (or weren't in the case of neville) established internationals are Arteta, Osman, and Distin.

considering our recent performances, and the fact that we definitely have one of our strongest teams in recent years, i doubt the pricks in the england national side will be able to sway someone like baines, who barely thinks he's worthy of our team, think he's better than us.

now rodwell on the other hand, is still young and i've learned not to trust the judgment of young footballers, so i am somewhat happy that despite his form he hasn't been called up to the full team.
