Leighton Baines - representing Everton on the national stage

England captain Steven Gerrard on John Terry: "I thought he did tremendously tonight. He showed what a great player he is for us, what a great leader he is and how important he is for us."

Not bringing Alex to the World Cup all the same!

Because he know's Terry is going...

If Terry's staying behind, he'll make sure she's on the first plane out there a week in advance of him!!!! :dodgy:

Nice to see Baines starting tonight, but he didn't do himself any favours. Didn't go forward aften enough to make an impression, if he wants to play it safe, they can play another CB as LB. I thought that playing against team like Egypt, which is still using 3-5-2 system, will be perfect for overlapping fullback like him, but he didn't deliver IMHO.
And I think he clearly needs a rest too...

Read the thread.

Wasn't helped by the lob sided formation and persons (Gerrard) not passing to him.

And what reading a thread would change? Watched the game and made my mind, enough for me.
If Ashley Cole would be as conservative as Baines tonight you would all scream to bring Baines to starting XI.
I know the way Gerrard was playing didn't help him, but still - he wasn't even trying to get into positions further up the pitch.

He did with Milner.

Because some one in front of him was allowing him to overlap and get forward.

1st hour it was just him holding the entire left side

So he's going to be reluctant to get forward. Certainly the tougher role than Brown.

I watched the game too. Milner allowed him to get forward more and play more forward passes.

The thread would show you're in the biggest minority (of one)

I thought it was a solid performance from Baines. As others have mentioned, he wasn't helped by Stevie MBE's apparent inability to see him. It wasn't just not looking to give him the ball either - I don't think he showed for the ball when Baines was in possession. There was one point in the first half when as soon as Baines received the ball, Gerrard (who was in space near the centre circle) turned his back to him and jogged towards the Egypt penalty area. Again, Milner did better in this respect.

The other thing about Gerrard's positioning was that Baines was horribly exposed defensively. Often he had 2 opponents to deal with and when there was only 1, they knew they could stand back a bit and make Baines decide whether to come and close him down (leaving a gap in behind into which he could play the ball) or give him time to pick out a cross.

I thought on many occasions, Baines passed it inside and went for the overlap only for the ball to be played through the middle, with little effort to return his play.
Yes, he could have been more exciting, but it takes teamwork to enable that.
Some good crosses, in particular the corner where Lampard should have scored, and a few poorer ones too.

I worry about him playing every match, hence why I always list a right back when we talk about our transfer needs, so he can rest somewhat through the season.

I have to say Gerrards comments when he stood next to Crouch were a little professionally protective, in a mutual appreciation society style.

Terry wasn't dire, but he didn't have a particularly great game either, and was lucky on several occasions. He hasn't been at his best for a while now. That may change, or it might get worse, but I feel his reputation is carrying him through somewhat.

Does he deserve to go to the World Cup?

Just about, but there would be much more competition for his place had he not been Chelsea and England captain.

As for the team, they played a bit like Everton at the moment, where it took them a while to get going.

Rooney..............
Has to be captain for the World Cup. Loving this guy more and more each time I watch him play. His passion is second to none, and the team only started to play when Rooney lost his patience with them, and roared his dissatisfaction in their direction. Reminded me of Bellamy for City who often does the same.

Need to get better though. It's not looking like the finished article yet, and I'm very surprised that there isn't extra matches booked before the tournament begins, which I think there should be.

Overall, Baines looked very capable, and not out of place.

Yeah will get 6 out of 10 in the press tomorrow, gave a corner away, didn't get forward enough. I'll laugh.

Just about every player ratings report I've seen gave him just that, a 6 out of 10 and did mention the not getting forward enough.

All too predictable aren't they?

Good call.

Personally, I think the fewer of our players who go to the WC the better. Selfish I know but, after this season's injury list, I'd like to think all the players who are fit at the end of the season are fit at the start of the next one. Can you just imagine us with a fully-fit squad next year - notwithstanding the exciting new addition? (y)
